Confirmed with Link: Pionk extension 6 years 7 AAV

ther are 23 roster spots that need to be filled. Not everyone can get 8 million plus a year.
There are other contracts that need to be done within a year or two as well.
Either his decision or the jets… but my money is on Ehlers being gone.
Jets have $25.5M left ... they can sign Ehlers no problem.
The big question is do the Jets want to sign Ehlers or does Ehlers want to try FA?
25/26 Cap projection is $95.5M
26/27 Cap projection is $104M
27/28 Cap projection is $113.5M
The Jets can keep this group together no problem ... the real problem is figuring out how long to keep them before their production drops off plus your prospects will be coming up ... its a fine line and not that easy.

Where's @sipowicz's post?

If you put this in the Pionk thread holy shit you'd have some takes on there. I posted a positive link from NHL.com on him early in the season and it was a battleground.

Change of tunes now.

Good for Neal. He's the #2 here and re-signing him gives Salomonsson time to grow.

Heinola in the wings?! 🤣 That is beyond wildly optimistic, considering the history.
Heinola “in the wings” reminds me of that of a video who discovers that a cat stowed away in their plane wing mid-flight as it crawled towards the cockpit.

Too much term and too much money. Where is the Ehlers extension
I think if Nik was staying, that would have been the first signing that got done.

I like him and want him here but maybe he doesn't want to be here or maybe the org wants to move on. He's tricky to play with I'd imagine because he's got an unpredictable, chaotic style. He’s also injured a fair bit, and has been a no show in the playoffs generally.

If we do move on, I hope there's a backup plan. Hard to see anyone internal replacing him next year.

I think we need to be careful about those cap projections. They were made prior to the current geopolitical climate. If we are heading to another recession and the Canadian dollar continues to lag then I'd imagine the league doesn't hit the revenue projections needed for those cap numbers.

If I was a manager I would be planning contingencies for a lower cap ceiling then what is projected.

I can't figure out why some people don't like this signing?
Pionk is in the top 10 RHD stats in most goals, points, +/- and the majority of those 10 RHD make more money and have Winnipeg on the no trade list.
So please tell me what's not to like about this signing.
For me the reserve is that Pionk played well his last contract year and then was way worse in each following year.
Now we are in a contract year and he's had a really strong season.
So if he plays similar to this year we are going to be fine.
If he regresses to what is more his norm (based on previous seasons) then it's not a great signing especially as his game falls off later in the contract.

That's no school thinking ... today's society is spend now and don't worry about tomorrow.
I have a funny feeling this summer some players are going to hit the jackpot.
The smart GMs will make sure they sign the players they want before FAs starts.

I will admit I was hoping for something in the 6's for 5 years.

The Samberg-Pionk pairing is an elite one though. They complement each other so well. If we get 3-4 years of them playing at this level Pionk and Samberg's potential contract will be worth it.

I also don't think it hurts when trying to sign Samberg that he will get to continue playing with another Hermantown Hawk/Minnesota Duluth Bulldog.

Give Samberg the Slavin deal and call it a day.

That would be excellent.

As Salomonsson develops - ideally as the RHD to Morrissey - the D is set for years.

Morrissey - DeMelo / Salomonsson
Samberg - Pionk
Stanley - Schenn/DeMelo/Miller

I have a feeling he might test free agency and see if a team plays him first line and gives him first line money, which I think someone will. Especially with cap going up

I want Samberg for 8 years. I hope this doesn't get in the way of that.

Also just adds to my expectation that Ehlers is gone. Can't get Sammy for 8 years, pay Pionk 7 and still have room for Ehlers.

Even with this deal we have something like $25m in space next year. If the team wants to bring back Ehlers and sign Sammy long term they definitely can. Especially if the cap keeps going up aggressively like the league is planning.

This one is coming in at 7.33% of the 25/26 cap. So this is really 7x$6,450,400 in 24/25 cap money which seems about right given the situation. Nobody is going to come cheap and a top 4 RHD at 7.33% of the cap is pretty damn good.

Neal seems to line up production and play wise with someone like Ryan Ellis in his prime and his big deal was 7.67% of that cap at the time.

It's a fair signing for both parties.
2RHD don't grow on trees.
If he plays like he did after JMo went down in the playoffs or against the Oilers, this is a great deal. If Stanley played with the mean streak Pionk has, he'd be 5 times better.
As far as Sammy goes, I'd like to see Chevy lock him up before he is eligible for an offer sheet.
