Confirmed with Link: Pionk extension 6 years 7 AAV

For me a big thing is there are no clauses…or at least none reported yet…

vilardi ehlers and samberg, we have plenty of money for all 3
ther are 23 roster spots that need to be filled. Not everyone can get 8 million plus a year.
There are other contracts that need to be done within a year or two as well.
Either his decision or the jets… but my money is on Ehlers being gone.

why are all 3 getting 8 million?

Not a fan. It's top 4 money, potentially top 2, but he's not the driver on that pairing. Samberg made Pionk a lot of money this season. Get that bag, I guess. Hope he lives up to it.
If you look at multiple offensive and utilization metrics, he is easily in there with the top 60 D across the league. Then look at the predicted AAV of top-30 RHD in the league going forward and you will see we got value.

But the biggest win in this signing is that he will hopefully have the perfect D partner in Samberg to complement his deficiencies. Together he (and they) will be more than the sum of the individual parts.

My issue with re-signing/extending players right now is it might take some of the fire out of them before the playoffs.. they’re locked in now so no need to showcase.

I think Ehlers is gone and Chevy knows it.

If it helps Samberg sign a 7 or 8 year deal, I really don't care if people think it's an overpayment.

Vibes are important. Give him and KC an A for next year. Let him and Samberg be a 2nd pair for the next 3-4 years.

It feels like an overpay to me. I almost would have rather those funds go towards Ehlers who is more difficult to replace than Pionk considering we have Heinola and Salomonsson waiting in the wings.

I want Samberg for 8 years. I hope this doesn't get in the way of that.

Also just adds to my expectation that Ehlers is gone. Can't get Sammy for 8 years, pay Pionk 7 and still have room for Ehlers.
How would it get in the way of Samberg signing? They are D partners and close friends. If anything it suggests the Jets are very keen on keeping the team together.

What are you talking about? I can’t believe how under rated Pionk is around here.

It's fine if we get 6 years of Pionk-with-Samberg level Pionk. But I said that about his last contract and the year leading up to it and he spent a few years injured and "playing through it" to the detriment of the team.

Hopefully his ankle issues are in the past.

Just fine.

Now we need Samberg and Vilardi signed, then Chevy can focus on bottom line guys and finding a top 6 winger to fill Ehlers spot when he leaves.

Great deal 6 X $7M is fair. No way are we anyway near replacing a legit top 4 RHD internally. Very happy about this.

I can see Salmo moving past Pionk, but hopefully it's a few years away. Perhaps he's earmarked to replace Schenn on the 3rd pairing.

Neal can be excellent -- with Samberg -- but we've also seen years of chaotic play with a number of other partners, sometimes explained via longish periods of injury. Hope is that the Jets see years of Good Pionk, but not crazy about the term here. Definitely some risk, especially on the downside. They're going to need Samberg to ink longterm.

But we've heard for years that he's part of the core, so a deal was always on the cards.

Absolutely. You said it better than me.
