Confirmed with Link: Pionk extension 6 years 7 AAV

I think that's a fair deal. Not too much; not really a discount. If he can keep up his current level of play into his 30s (I do have some doubts that his game will age like wine) then I think the value will increase as the cap goes up.

Overall, pleased to get this done. Beats losing him in free agency.

I like this! It seems like a fair deal for both the team and the Pionky-tonk man.

Definitely smart of Chevy to get these deals locked up before the cap officially goes up.

Obviously all contract extensions have that, "need to see how this plays out" aspect to them, but at this point, I think we really need to see how new contracts signed in the next few years start to look if the cap rises like they speculate. 7M might be the going rate for 2nd pair guys, and if Pionk can play at even 80% of his play this year this might be fine. But he'll have to keep up his current play.

The other aspect is, everyone knows how hard it is to find RHD. I've cursed at Pionk (not so much this year) more than anyone on the team I think, but he is still a top 4 RHD. If we didn't extend him, we'd have to either pay another one as a UFA (not sure any are available and/or would sign), or trade for one. And now you're looking at comparing Pionk at his new contract, vs Defenseman X + the cost to acquire defenseman X. Depending on who that is and the cost, it might be the team paying something significant to a defenseman that might not be much of an improvement (if at all).

Wow, guess we're extending everyone now (where is Ehlers)
Not sure if it's the best contract but can't argue with the results this year and glad to see he's happy to stay in Winnipeg

I don't think so. Don't forget what's coming up next year.

These are my predictions from a couple weeks ago. They would be under the cap by about 300k

we will have plenty of money for connor the following season as well

I don't think so.
Not going to debate the numbers with you right now. Too hard to do on the phone. But that doesn't match the numbers I've seen earlier.

With Ehlers gone, yes. I think Chevy just spent his money.

Man I've been a Pionk fan since he came here. The crusade to run him out of town was strong in the offseason after game 5. I thought he'd bounce back.

I like it. The UMD guys like it here. That's 2 off the board. Sammy should easily re-sign. Just need to re-sign Toninato who has a lifetime playoff call up card after the GWG in game 1 2021.

I think this whole team comes back next year minus one player, a guy we won't be starting with in the playoffs.

cap is projected to go up to 104 when connor is up, connors 7.1 + the 8.5 million increase is more then enough to keep him also schenns 2.75 is off the books as well and salo can replace him

There's absolutely nothing on the UFA market for RHD. Even if there was, you are likely overpaying for a lesser player of his stature anyways. Chevy and co are committing to this window quite clearly. Not really sure how those final years will look, but as the cap rises, it'll likely soften the blow a bit.

I'd love to see Samberg get done in tandem with this sooner than later.
