I don’t think the issues lies with the players on the ice.

I’m seeing too many guys that have taken big steps backwards this year for no apparent reason.

Zaitsev and Paul in particular are puzzling to me, Mete has looked far worse, and our general play looks confused.

No one seems to know how to play with each other and so passes are off, confusion over who takes the puck and who should be where, so many pucks thrown away in all zones to places where I guess guys are expected to be but are not.

Maybe things are too complex right now, and maybe there lacks familiarity with each other and the system and so guys are running around confused.

To me it almost look like someone has flicked the ‘crazy switch’ and a group that played a simple hard nosed pressure game has fallen apart into a bunch of individuals running around lots, doing very little.

Gus has looked great.

Paul is not and NHL player. He is a good story for perseverance.

Great observational points that DJ should be a goner by the time the new GM gets comfortable in his new role.

Team needs better leadership.

This would be the year for a consensus top three in the draft… why does it seem like the top guys are question marks again :(

Sens just get lucky when we get the #1 pick, look at history! Daigle, Phillips, Berard, a who's who of star players! Its just how she goes for the Senators lol

At least we ended up with Redden and Phillips…. That list of Edmonton firsts and 1OAs is painful…

but then getting that 1 McDavid makes it all worth while (maybe not ALL, but I'd buy a ticket to just watch him play every game lol)

the answer is pretty simple. Depth.

It is what people have been saying all summer. Zaitsev...too high in the lineup. Mete....too high in the lineup. Paul...too high in the lineup

Paul is a winger who is playing 2nd line C for us. Its not his fault. Its the roster construction. Mete is probably fine in a more sheltered role. Most of the guys on our roster are playing too high up. Norris would be a 2C on a playoff team yet he is playing 1C. Pinto would be eased in...instead we are throwing him to the wolves against high end defensemen and checkers.

Depth.

Its not as simple as that in my opinion.

Paul in particular isn’t playing much of a different role than he was last season, but looks like he isn’t an impact player on the ice at all.

He used to make a difference on our checking line. He was relentless on the boards, good stick, heave shot, great cycle, great pressure. This season I barely notice him on the ice, and I notice Sanford a heck of a lot more.

Something is up.

Paul role has completely changed from last year.... He is literally playing C and being asked to be a 'defensive' player. He is most suited for wing and one the 3rd liner where he would probably excel

The answer is literally depth. Some of these guys on the team are completely being overwhelmed cause they are playing too far up the lineup.

Also the team wasn't any better last year so I don't think we should be even using that as a measuring stick

He was much better last season from an individual stand point. He was very much a reason why we were known to be ‘hard to play against’.

It’s not simply a depth issue, we’re lacking key centres, but our line up isn’t that much worse or shallow than last years, especially by the end of the year.

Anyways, I’m happy to agree to disagree rather than post in circles.

I was just joking about this on my beer league team. Lol, said when I’m on the wing and our D have the puck, I have no clue where the puck is going and whether I should wait on the wall or drift to centre etc. It’s always a shit show because we’ve literally never talked about any kind of plan or structure. Lol
