PHT article on Richards "under pressure"

I am not worreid abotu Richards. If he improves his game awesome LA hasa steal of a player. If he continues to play how he did late last year (or regresses) I am not worried. He will always be desired on the market in trade, especially affter the years where he makes more than his cap hit have been paid down.

I think Lombardi did the right thing in the exit interview. Richards knows that he was subpar this season and he has to train better in the summer. It's on him whether he wants to stay on this team or not. Carter has upped his game. Richards will adjust and do the same. He is too valuable in pressure situations to prematurely trade him. Guys like that don't grow on trees.

I was watching some of the 2014 Stanley Cup DVD last night and I've also got more respect for Brown. He's turned into a great captain and is more vocal on the ice than I thought. Since Brown/Richards had arguably their worst years as a pro - I see upside for both of them next year. Add Toffoli/Pearson with another year under their belt and we could see another really good season.

I've been re watching all the PO games and Richards played ok. He certainly elevated the guys he played with and had he played with guys that could score would have had more pts on the board. He made some great plays at times and had 'third assists' on a couple of ppg's that were the real difference on the play. Sure he was not at his best, but it was not a car crash either.

It's much easier to evaluate a player without the stress of watching live.

As long as we have Richards on this team, and have posters like Herby, you can be sure that we'll NEVER hear the end of this.

Again, what did I say in this thread that is so crazy? Do you honestly believe if he plays like he did last season that he returns in 2015-2016? That is all I said, I said if he returns to 2012 levels he likely returns with Stoll being the odd man out.

BTW, love how you call me out, say I'm biased or whatever yet you have the Kings fans since June 2011 who switched what team they cheer for over the player aren't considered biased the other way, hell some of those guys still can't admit play his last season was a disaster.

So again, we will see what happens, maybe it was a conditioning thing, maybe he returns to his previous level, or maybe the decline continues, will be an interesting season.

Kopi still going to make less than Corey Perry?

You're missing the point. EVERYONE KNOWS what your stance is on Richards. You don't have to repeat yourself for years and years, like you did with Stoll.

But it's ok for others to say ad nauseum that he had a viral infection that lasted from December to June, was out of shape etc. etc but I can't.

My original post in this thread was calling out the ridiculous statement in the original article that he did heavy lifting defensively for the Kings, what if the writer had said...

"Anze Kopitar put up offensive numbers but wasn't expected to contribute defensively"

He said something just as ridiculous, why can't he be called out.

That's fine, but my response to your original post was just in fun, not personal.

Herby wants him to play at a certain level. It's understandable. Hopefully we get a player that can play at that level next year.

I don't expect the Philly player to ever return, I understand guys wear down, especially someone under 6 feet who played the style MR did for so long. I'm not Johnny Utah, I can live without the physical play and the fighting, and I understand the offense is not going to be what it once was, but last season was an embarrassment in almost all facets of his game. The wheels literally came off, no speed, no offense, no physical play, no defense, no short handed chances (something that made MR very special in Philly)

And you literally cringed every time Richards ended up on the ice against the other teams top center, he was that terrible defensively. And that is a bigger problem than any lack of physical play or lack of offense.

All I want is positive consistency.

I just want a player who is capable of being a third line center for the life of his contract, with Kopi and Carter here that is all he needs to be. If MR can be a third line center then his contract while still bad is manageable. Last year he could not even be that, and anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.

So yes, the title of the article is correct even if the content was bad.

Did you know that 32 games into the 2013-14 season, Richards was the Kings points leader, tied with Kopitar?

32 seems to be an interesting number of games to choose, but it appears to be the end of a streak where Richards had 7 points in 5 games and was a +7 over those games.

In the following 76 games of the season he contributed...

8G
17A
25P
-17 +/-

So yes, 32 games he contributed offensively, for over double that amount of time he was a disaster on both ends of the ice.

I don't think people quite grasp how horrible his season was last year, especially defensively when compared to everyone else on the team. Obviously his loyalists weren't going to see it, but I was shocked that fans like TG and Ziggy tried to defend his play last season.

Again, we will see what happens this season, if he can play like a 3rd liner then I can live with that, but if he doesn't improve significantly from the fourth line player he was much of last season they have to move on from him.

I chose 32 as that was the high-point of his points-per-game for the season, 0.84.

After game 32, what happened?
Not going to speculate, but it was unusual.

His previous track-record, not to mention some of the contributions he made towards the Kings winning a 2nd Cup, entitles him every chance to redeem himself.

Unfortunately, fans with short-memories and what-have-you-done-for-me-lately attitudes like to pile on with ignorant statements when it comes to this situation. It's rather disgusting.

What have you done for me lately.....that's a good one. Richie's been a dud on the ice since we got him. Great in the locker room supposedly but zippo on the ice, geez he even had to promise Dean he would get off his fishing boat and train this off season so he wouldn't be bought out...what does that tell you??? Richie knows he has struggled and because Herby has a good eye for the game everyone craps on him for calling it as it is.

2 Cups in the 3 years he has been here, none in the preceding 44. Is he as good as he was in Philly? No, but to say he has brought nothing to this team is just dumb.

Fourth on the team in playoff points in 2012, giving the Kings a legit 2nd line C behind Kopitar, and second on the team in playoff scoring in 2013 despite missing 3 playoff games, which was 3 more points than Kopitar, and arguably the Kings' best player in the 2013 playoffs where they reached the Conference Finals despite struggling to score.

Only someone who hasn't paid any attention would call his tenure with the Kings an absolute dud. Has he been a disappointment at times? Yes, he certainly has, but his 2013 season was actually pretty damn good and he started off strong this past season until about January. And even with his struggles he managed to finish 4th on the team in scoring during the regular season and provided some offense playing in a grinding role during the playoffs.

Oh yeah, he also assisted on a lousy game winning goal in OT in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. What a bum.

He also scored the tying goal against the Blackhawks in 2013 in game 5 with 9 seconds left to send it into OT, a key goal in the VAN series in 2012, and the game winner against ANA in game 7 this season.

But yeah, he's a bum.
