owners in the negotiations want to end high school players being drafted to MLB. They want to adopt an NFL model and require 2 years (post high-school graduating class) to become draft eligible.

The proposal would also cut the MLB Draft from 20 to 12 rounds, slash draft bonuses by more than 50% compared to last year’s totals, allow for more expansive trading of draft picks and establish hard draft slots, which would mean that a draft pick’s signing bonus would be for a set amount as determined by the draft position.

They also want to end international amateur signings and have the same 12 round draft for international amateur players with their age needing to be 18 to enter the international draft.

I don’t think I disagree with having prospects go to college for a year or two. 18 year olds especially for baseball are hard to project and I understand owners not wanting to pay big money for high schoolers.

I do not agree with shrinking the draft though. I know why they’re doing it (to keep contracting the minor leagues) but that would do more harm for the sport.

Not having high schoolers would also contract the minor leagues I’d imagine. Probably an A ball team.

Kind of ironic timing considering two kids speed ran their way to the bigs just this year.

Feel bad for the high school pitchers that are ready to turn pro and have to go to college and pitch on short rest in the tournament though to save a coach’s job.

Would they still be eligible after one year of Juco ball? That might be the move.

College baseball would be a lot more interesting though.

It would, but I also think the owners if they want kids to go to college, will probably have to give on reducing the number of years to get to FA. If they had it their way, you would have guys at the earliest making their debut at 22, so you figure then most guys debut 24-26. Which would then mean not hitting FA until their early 30s.

Hey look, billionaires trying to save money

Rangers fan here coming in peace - I’m taking my nephew down to the Mets/phils game Saturday.

Is it worth the extra $ for the Hall of Fame club seats?
Depends what you’re looking for.

They redid it this year and it’s beautiful. Has a lot of historical stuff. It’s air conditioned. More private than the rest of the stadium. Nothing that’s a 100% can’t miss thing though but if you get a decent deal it’s probably worth it.

Yeah, if you're a guy who would want to sign right out of high school, you can't be put in the situation Quinn Mathews was a few years ago where they kept him out there for 156 Pitches.

And you can't get it in writing, so I don't know how that would even work. You just hope a coach follows what he said he'd do?

Alvarado loses us another game. He's been flat out terrible this season. Just like most of the bullpen.
Kind of hard to believe how they're borderline top 10 and were even in the top 5 at one point in bullpen ERA having 1 great (Duran) and 1 good reliever (Kerkering). I do think Bowlan can show something if given a bigger workload.

What's the logic here from an owner's standpoint?

money primarily and also risk aversion (altho that also plays into wasted money)

They want to cut the bonus total by 50% from what the draft is currently allotted and what international signing is currently allotted.

They also want to introduce less risk by pushing the international amateurs from age 16 to age 18. Seeing more development before drafting them at 18 as opposed to signing them at 16 right now.

It would also theoretically work that way for the draft. If high school to MLB is cut as a pipeline and it forces high school players to college for multiple years then it would help scouting have less busts as opposed to drafting a 17 or 18 year old kid right out of high school where the actual talent level of the opponents can be drastically different.

If NFL teams drafted directly from high school we'd probably see a lot more busting.

Gotcha. Sounds like we're heading for a work stoppage
