Yeah. Successful NFL defense is when everyone understands what is happening, what their teammates are doing, and what they individually are supposed to do. Gimme the Brain Guys out of college every time.

Whitt in DC got slammed for steadily dumbing down his defense. He openly admitted in an interview that if guys aren't on the same page more than a couple times, that read is ripped out of the playbook. They stripped down until they found the thing they all understood, and a dirt simple defense played by a severe lack of talent worked far better than what they started with because it was more cohesive. Jim Haslett came up with all kinds of schemes and reads and situational shit that the players conceded was brilliant; problem was that nobody could keep it all straight and the result was total shit. The key is a solid plan executed really well. Don't outsmart yourself or your own roster.

Fangio had everyone on the same page. Everyone understood what KC does this year with their roster, and understood what they were meant to do when they were doing the thing they do. Totally amazing how much difference even 3rd and 6th made for KC rather than their usual 3rd and 3. First defense in a very long time that I don't think fell for a single Reid mindgame, and they did it with full confidence and authority. It was impressive. It must have taken a lot of work.

On the KC side, Spags sold out on stopping Barkley and dared Hurts to beat them. Good news for KC: they shut down Saquon really well. Bad news for KC: They lost the Hurts gambit severely. Maybe that defensive plan works if their offense keeps up but that didn't happen.

Cover 3 fell out of fashion because Single High Zones did. Part of that was schematic, but part of it was also not having the lynchpin to run it. Tampa 2 only succeeded as a base because Derrick Brooks was an alien. Seattle Cover 3 only thrived as a base because of Earl Thomas. Once he fell off, that period was over. At their peak, Seattle was running >50% Cover 3 and a ton of Cover 1. They were largely a static defense. QBs were confident in their pre-snap reads.

Fangio varies his coverage plenty. Off the top of my head, they ran ~20%+ of Cover 1, Cover 3, Quarters, and Cover 6. Hell, they run 4 distinct personnel packages. The whole point is that it's not simple, but it has the illusion of it. It tries to present unified looks to the QB and then change the look via things like rotations out of them around the snap. It wasn't just DeJean starting that helped everything gel. The players needed time and reps to learn the system.

Edit: Speaking of packages, the consistency across personnel was also amazing. EVERYONE was on the same page, knew what they were looking at, knew what to do. There was no group of players looking at a situation and reading it wrongly. There was nothing to pick on.

There were also many who had legit issues with Hurts around decision making, late on throws and bailing from the pocket. Those comments get taken out of context as saying Hurts sucks, when its not the case, its just flaws that can limit him sometimes. But most of those also said he's a winner and gamer -- hes always had those flaws but when the game is on the line or its a big game he is pretty clutch.

Sirianni I think the hate comes from people who don't like his personality but you cant say that instead you have to make up something else.

EPA = Estimated Points Added. Usually measured per play or per specific type of play (run, pass, screen, deep throw, etc). More is more gooder for the offense.

I don’t expect an upgrade. I expect something similar to after 2022 where they have to burn a year to realize they need to go another direction.

I have no way of knowing how Patullo will do if he is hired but I have some doubts with the Eagles likely losing Moore and Nussmeier (QB coach) this offseason.

I’m not going to complain for a while on it though because the team just won the championship and I’m riding the high.

As an aside, y'all on this board are a trip. This is unquestionably the best Eagles team that has ever existed and as more time passes will likely be held in regard as one of the best rosters the NFL has seen, at least in the Salary Cap era, and reading this place from time to time you'd think they were the Browns. Cracked me up all year long. Never change, guys.

Reich would be a good hire. He is now 63. Had 2 HC jobs. Probably not someone teams will give another opportunity to. So, you wouldn't worry about him getting plucked like what has happened to Detroit losing Johnson/Glenn or what happened to themselves with Steichen/Gannon. KC has run with Reid as the defacto OC and Spags as DC for many years now.

It's also very impressive in how the Eagles have drafted and how Howie has moved around picks. Wentz trade kicked things off, plus the NO trade to land Carter and getting that extra 2nd this past year to move up with Wash for Dejean.

One of the things I noticed - especially when it was 34 - 0, is that not only were the Eagles running down the play clock to 0:02 or 0:01 before snapping the ball, they did not seem to exhibit any urgency when handing off to Saquon in the third or fourth quarters. They appeared to be happy just having him slam into the line, not twist or hyper-extend anything, and were perfectly good with a two- or three-yard gain, not as a set-up, but for its own means. Running the clock after it was 34 - 0, even in the third quarter, seemed to be the prime directive rather than amassing more points. The Chiefs "holding Barkley" to low rushing yardage, seemed to be part of a "strategy" by the Eagles at that point more than being an achievement by the Chiefs.

I almost always want to trade down and I pay functionally no attention to mocks. This is just Brugler's personal big board, which I respect quite a bit.

This isn't about 32 or the 1st round or predicting anything. My hope was that Emmanwori wouldn't start gaining traction as a 1st rounder and might be available in the late 2nd. I know that I need him to not run great times to achieve this. There is also no way Howie will ever use a 1st on a Safety and I'm fine with that.

In fangio’s scheme, you don’t need elite S. You can draft one high but unlikely to keep the player past their rookie deal.

If Howie sees someone he likes he doesn’t sit and hope he falls. Going to move up to get the player he wants. Same goes the other way. If he doesn’t like what is on the board he’s more than willing to move down.
