I looked at the replay and he was sacked and the refs blew the play dead at about 32 seconds left.

Then just lol.

I have no idea how what we just witnessed, actually happened. An actually serious coach would call a timeout when it was so clear his QB wasn’t thinking clearly (let’s just run a play instead of call a timeout). I’m furious and I don’t even like the Bears 😆

I got their initial idea of not calling the timeout. Like you wanted a quick play there potentially to make it a more manageable FG. The time out in that theory would give you all of the field. But when that thing started getting around getting pretty down there & Williams wasn’t snapping it. The HC has to call the time out there.

I need to know everyone’s opinions on who’s at fault for that Bears L.
D'Andre Swift's fault.

Real thoughts. It's on Eberflus. You're the head coach for a reason. If shit goes sideways you have to step in to calm things down. Also unless your rookie QB is Andrew Luck level of intelligent, you probably shouldn't be doing some crazy end of the game clock shenanigans.

Just watched the clip of the end of the Bears/Lions game based on the comments in this thread.

It looked like both Williams and Eberflus thought they had burned their last timeout.

Disaster and certainly a fireable offense.

Coach makes the call. Headset is active at that point, so he's getting instructions. I would like it if he knew what was happening, but almost no one would go against the direction there.

As the clock kept ticking down wouldn’t some other personnel remind the coach? At least I’d hope

Yeah, it's 99% on Eberflus. The 1% is if Williams is in a frame of mind to understand that the seconds are dwindling away and is capable of putting his hands into a "T".

I don't get how the staff didn't come together to get him to call the timeout. Maybe there was so much yelling in the headset that Eberflus just froze. How someone on the sideline didn't slap him into calling it will be one of life's unsolved mysteries.

This is why many teams at this point have a guy that tells you what to do in these situations. Smart teams like the Eagles and Ravens have one of their analytics staff doing this on game days for example.

The Bears…do not seem like a smart team.

That actually makes me wonder how many veteran QB’s that are fully cognizant of situational football save NFL coaches at times in situations like that?

Like we see a ton more clock management mistakes at the college level but you’re often talking developing teenaged or young 20 something QB’s which Williams essentially still is.
