I’ve seen people throwing out contract comps that I just don’t think are realistic like JOK. Patrick Queen got 3/41 (14 Guaranteed) and the reporting at the time was that he took 4-5 less per year to go to Pittsburgh. Queen was a 2nd team All Pro with a bunch of subpar ones before that, so in that way he’s a good fit. But he is a couple of years younger. Baun just made the First Team All Pro. This is a completely different animal than most players. Those guys never hit the market.

I’m concerned that he ends up closer to Roquan Smith (5/100) than even Queen. There are ~half a dozen good Off Ball Linebackers in the whole league and a lot of cap space out there. Washington for example…

Roquan got 60 Guaranteed.

Feel like I had a good bead on this one. It's about my max I'd have been willing to pay to keep him and I still think he could have gotten more from someone else if that's what he wanted to do. He chose high guarantees over AAV, which is completely understandable. No reason to complain.

The interesting part here is that this is the 2nd time Howie handed out a big LB contract. Both were re-signings. I'll file that away for next time since it's obviously a different animal to him. I had some reservations given how spectacularly the last one (Bradham) blew up.

I haven't looked into how NFL cap works at all, how does Howie consistently pay huge money for players and we never are strapped for cap? Is he just insanely good at dumping players with low value?

One of the big differences between NFL and NHL cap is that the NFL can have different cap numbers year-to-year on the same contract...also it has void years that can exist after the player's contract ends. So it can spread the numbers out very strategically. Howie seems to be very good at kicking the can down the road in a quite strategic manner.

Also, paying guaranteed money to players (also a different think than the NHL) can enhance the value of deals at different times - and their owner Lurie seems to not mind shelling out that cash whereas some other owners don't really like handing out those real dollars.

So yeah Howie is great, but thankfully the owner allows him to be as well.
