Phil Kessel

The only evidence we have to say kessel is out of shape are pictures of his round face. By every other indication, he's in excellent shape. This is fact and essentially beyond argument.

Kessel lost like 15-20 pounds this season. Due to the lockout the leafs weren't keeping an eye on him so this might never happen again.

How High Does Kessel Get?

If kessel signs an extension with the leafs, and continues to produce, how high do you think he can get on the leafs all-time scoring list. He doesn't play a physical game, which would allow his body to age well, so I can see him playing In his 40's. Does any one see him dethroning Sittler for the all time scoring leader. I personally think he will get in the top 10 at least.

He doesn't play a physical game and he is very much only a transition player that relies on change of pace and acceleration (in 5 on 5). That is concerning for anyone that gets older, and is also concerning in terms of production. He isn't the type of player that will win a battle on the boards, its an element which we need to address on a line with Kessel.

I think anything more than 7.5 is overpayment unless the cap arbitrarily increases over the years.

Why would it matter if the cap arbitrarily increases?

I think you read the title and not the post because this has nothing to do with the topic lol.

Not as high as. . . Oh, points. Unless he leaves earlier than anticipated Id say top 5 is a lock, if he stays his whole career (this would imply his linemates dont suck) and plays at the level we expect, he can be the leader when its all said and done.

I agree I think it all depends on how many games he plays, if he plays a 1000 in a leafs uniform I see no reason why he can't finish on top.

It would be mad cool to have a little race for franchise point leader, after Kessel retires at #1 Kadri will be chasing him and in his last game in a Leafs uniform (and on NHL ice) passes Kessel by 1 point.

Had debates over this with my brother, no doubt he finishes top five. Could be as high as #1 or #2 if we get him a center to play with.

He will not be playing into his 40s. Less that 0.01% of players ever play past 40.
Advances in medical technology not to mention the fact that its his intelligence that makes him elite. Even if he slows down, I could see him figuring out ways to increase production.

The way he makes players around him better is just impressive. He could do that without being physical or having a diverse goal scoring repertoire. To be honest, he reminds me of a smallish, winger version of Joe Thornton.

PS: I could see him on the all-time scoring list.

Scoring leader belongs to Sundin.

I am pretty sure Kessel got here at a younger age than Sundin so that means he has a chance to play here more years than Sundin. So it's all about how long he wants to stay here and how consistent he stays. If he stays here long enough and stays consistent enough he will become the all time scoring leader for us.

I never really thought of this actually..

In three and a half seasons he has already put up 253 points. The 5th all time leading scorer for our team is George Armstrong with 713 points in a Leafs uni. Which means Kessel needs to put up another 460 points to tie George. In his 3 1/2 with the Leafs he has averaged about .9 points/game. At that pace it would take him another 511 games to get to 713 points, which is a little over 6 complete 82 game seasons.

So if he plans on reaching Mats' 987 points, he will either have to put up over a point a game for the next few years, or play well into his 30's with the Leafs.

Not to mention Sundin left while he was still relatively young. Hell if he wanted too he likely couldve played as long as Lidstrom (hes a year younger) but I doubt hed be as dominant.

I believe the Leafs are more likely to re-sign Kessel now that he realizes just how valuable he is to our team going forward. Phaneuf has had some question marks with me. It'd be nice to have one of the big two to re-sign before the deadline next season.

To put that is context 987 points / 82 points (= PPG pace) = 12 years of 82 points in 82 games.

Kessel currently has completed 4 seasons and accumulated 253 points.

987 points - 253 points = 734 points difference.

So to accumulate 735 points to pass Sundin = 9 years at PPG (82 points in 82 games).
