I'm tired of losing against divisional opponents, especially at home. We can't beat Rags, Philly, Devils and Pens, ****.
And they're not even the top teams in the division.
So far to my untrained eye, it doesn’t seem obvious why he was a “steal” at $4M in late August as a UFA.What concerns me the most about gardiner is how slow he looks. I would be fine with him being an offensive/power play specialist type guy who didnt really play good defense if he showed much skill at that first trait but so far he hasn't. Maybe its lack of familiarity or opportunity to do that but in all zones he doesnt look like he has the wheels to be a difference maker
that faceoff violation penalty in the first period was such a stupid call and despite wanting to abstain from scapegoating the team's bad effort, they were buzzing before that. if they get another one in the 1st, the flyers probably go away. just a horrendous way to shift momentum.
Yeah you could visibly see them deflate on the ice. Can't understand why they are still so mentally fragile, especially with Marty back. The real Captain needs to return.
Yea, Dougie struggled for a while as well and then he started to settle more into what we expected. Gardiner has literally known nothing but Toronto's system his whole career, so there's an adjustment period. Plus has he really looked much worse than anyone else on our team in general? Every single guy seems to have had goal-costing brain farts, literally every. single. one.I'm willing to give Gardiner through December as I do believe the system is different enough and the talent is different enough that he's going to have to work his way into things.
If the guys are that dependent on having Williams’ presence in the room then they’re not a very good hockey team to be honest.
not to take away from the point about the team being the 3rd youngest in the league, but to truly outperform the team that made it to the ECF last year, they will have to set their hair on fire once again for a solid 4 months at the start of the year. realistically what they're on pace for is to not need that kind of hot streak to make it back into the playoffs. They're young. Seems like most of their problems can be explained by the fact that they're a young team overall.
A strong vocal veteran leader is hugely important. I thought that was evident at the end of last year.
Saying they're "not a very good hockey team" when they're outperforming the team that made it to the ECF last year is just hand wringing.
They're a young, talented team that needs to keep learning and growing. That's it.

Saying they need their “real captain back” when they’re outperforming the team that made it to the ECF last year is what then?
That's not what I'm saying at all. The argument was "the team is not very good". My counterargument is "the team is good but needs stronger leadership to achieve its potential." That doesn't seem controversial to me.
Willy has a decade on these guys, so he's an obvious choice. If it's not him, maybe Jordan grows into the role; he's only been the sole captain for two months.
But I do believe this is probably a better team with Justin Williams on it, assuming he still has the physical tools.
I understand. You are accustomed to me saying dumb and/or mad things, which is fair.Apologies, I mistook a different post as yours.
