Awful for Utah.
Couts is a shell of his former self unfortunately. Injuries and NHL games since he was 18 have caught up with him. It’s possible with the rising cap that maybe a team takes a chance on him at a discount for a 3C spot but he didn’t do much this year playing with some of the more talented Flyers forwardsIs it? Couts is the exact type of player I feel like that franchise needs.
Keller - Couts - Schmaltz seems like they'd kill it.

Hayton is 24 and is only signed through next summer. He scored 46 points this season.I mean, I get it, and Utah is taking a risk here, but utilmately they are giving up a similarly priced cap dump and a couple of picks for a 6'4 center that will play with two broken legs to win for his team.
Just seems like a perfect vibe element for the young Utah nucleus that fits in with the general "identity" they are creating.
He's 32 with 5 full yrs.Sean Couturier at 5.75 mil for Barrett Hayton NYR 2026 2nd, Carolina 2027 3rd
Most flyer fans would give up one of the late 1's with Couts to trade the contract for nothing. You can make a case both late 1's.Sean Couturier at 5.75 mil for Barrett Hayton NYR 2026 2nd, Carolina 2027 3rd

Hayton is 24 yrs old and makes 2.6 per
Couturier is 31, has 5 years remaining at $7.75
Hayton is probably better than Couts now and will be for the remainder of Couturiers contract.
And why not? The coaching staff absolutely raves about his abilities. You’re not gong to convince anyone that this is a good deal for Utah.I disagree on Hayton. He's got one more cheap deal, but I don't see Utah paying him what his ask ultimately will be.
Also, a lot of this is about adding a different type of accountability and culture to the Utah room.

You calling Hayton a cap dump lets me know all I need to know about your knowledge of Utah.
He isn't elite at anything lol. He needs to be put with talent to pick up any points and you're forgetting that he's also had multiple parts of the season where he's sucked ass. Decent reclamation project for sure, and has value, but not a ton of it.I’d rather have Hayton straight up at this point even if contracts were even.
I’m not sure where people are getting this idea that Hayton is some sort of throw in or placeholder guy Utah is just gonna toss into deals. I’ve seen it on n multiple threads this off-season. He’s been at 20 goals and 45 points two of his last three years and the season in between was marred by time out and an unsustainably low shooting percentage. He’s big, he’s really good both ways, he’s good on face offs and he’s still 24. At worst he’s a pretty elite middle six center who is going to get you 20 goals and 45-50 points and do all the little things your coach likes. Utah is not trying to move on from Hayton. He’s just in that weird zone of being better than some pure third line center but not driving the bus enough offensively to be your second line center. Kinda Ryan McLeod territory.
Like…what at this point suggests you should bank on a broken down Coots to be better than that moving forward? Guy is a warrior and was awesome in his prime but he is what he is now, which is essentially what Hayton already does for Utah.
