Hey everyone!

So I'm not sure if I've mentioned this, but I'm a very avid golfer. I played about 80 rounds last year alone! As a result I follow the PGA Tour pretty religiously and I've been getting into this TGL thing too. Not a huge fan of LIV but I don't want to exclude the thread from someone that might like it.

To summarize, this is a general golf discussion thread!

What do you guys think of TGL?

I am always down for a good golf discussion. 90+ rounds for me in the summer, +1 handicap.

Also watch a ton of golf be it PGA, LPGA, DP World, Champions (no LIV, though, f*** those guys). The TGL is kind of an interesting idea. Something to watch on Monday/Tuesday evenings in the cold of winter. I don't mind it. Just wish they were using better tracking technology. Also, Marty Smith is the worst and needs to go.

It sucks big time & the emotion is contrived.

I went to the Boston/Jupiter match and it was pretty good. Definitely a better experience when you’re in the building and Sofi is a really cool venue but the game graphics aren’t great, some of the hole designs are kinda corny and the Full swing tech really isn’t all that accurate or reliable. Apparently there was a very brief discussion with Trackman but Tiger’s relationship with Full Swing drove the conversation on that one.

I’ve been to a few LIV events and they are always a good time but the competition can be hit or miss. All the players are already paid and there’s really no prestige in the rankings or winning the events so it’s not a pinnacle of competitiveness. But the atmosphere, interactiveness and fan experience are awesome. Sounds like they are heading for reunification, whatever that is going to look like, it sounds like the best players in the world will be on the same courses again, and in the end it forced the PGA to adapt a bit and if LIV players coming back causes some animosity on tour I think it will just add to the competition.

Also 80 rounds is extremely impressive, especially if you are only able to play 6-8 months a year. I did 112 rounds in a calendar year in 2023 and it was a lot but I also wasn’t working at the time and was able to play over the entire year between here and Alberta. Now that I’m working again I’ll be lucky to get 40-50 this year, there will be a lot more rounds played on the TM.

Yeah almost the same story with me in 2024. My company laid me off after 4 years in April 2024. So I searched for jobs from 9-1pm, then I'd either go play or hit the range.

I did cheat a bit though, playing about 10 rounds in Arizona over the winter :)

I feel the exact way about TGL! Honestly during this time of the year, unless the Oilers are on, I'm usually pretty bored. I'm not much of a basketball fan, and even if I was watching the Raptors are absolute ass. At least now I have something to look forward to on Mondays/Tuesdays!

90 rounds? +1 HCP? Damn dude, you're living the dream!

I know nothing about golf, but the commercial I saw for the TGL made it look like a really cool concept.

80 and 90 plus rounds, I wish i could get in half of that. Used to get close, when work encouraged it 10 years ago, but that was work golf. Too much drinking and didn't get any better. I try to get in 25-30 in Alberta/BC and hope to go for trip or two a year south to Nevada, Arizona or Carolina. Want to try the Robert Trent Jones trail in Alabama, bucket list maybe for next winter. Hilton Head is enjoyable.

Handicap is my slow swing speed....

So far some observations on TGL and Full Swing:

Full Swing
  • Draw bias - players have mentioned it's extremely hard to cut (fade) the ball when using full swing.
  • Increased distance - all players have mentioned (and adjusted to) being a club to a club and a half longer in some cases (lie dependent, will discuss next) and it caught a few guys wayyy off-guard.
  • Lies - both the bunker and the rough have been giving surprisingly clean lies leading to increased distance. Even when players perceive the ball to be down it always seems to rocket out of there. However, there is a catch 22, with the rough, how that patch of grass is grown seems to have a increased chance of grabbing a club face and twisting it like crazy.
  • Decreased spin on greens - a few guys ( Cam Young, McIlory, Fitzpatrick) have mentioned that the ball seems to spin less on the green than expected.
Greenzone
  • Green is difficult to read under the lights - see players laying their belly to read the green.
  • Spin on the surface is quite high - many players have mentioned how short chips really check up, but it also makes a great surface for really good shots.
  • Green is likely faster than expected.
TGL
  • Hammer rule change was absolutely dynamite. Made this significantly more competitive.
  • Overall the environment seems fun to be in, lots of cheering.
  • Watching experience is pretty good, isn't boring but also doesn't feel rushed. 2 hours is the allotted air time and if you have SN+ you can just rewatch the match at a later time and skip all the commercials.
  • So far most of the guys seem to be in it, with the absolute standouts being Tom Kim, Justin Thomas, and Tommy Fleetwood. Tiger seems to be having a good time too. But then there are some questionable picks for what is supposed to be live entertainment. I get that Young, Cantlay and Glover are good golfers but a big part of this is personality too. You need to, oh, I don't know, at least answer the questions the HOST asks you during the round as a bare minimum.

Overall I've enjoyed it. Not much goes on during the in-between days when the Oilers don't play so this has been a nice alternative.

Also, I hit 162 ball speed on my driver this weekend at the sim. Pretty good for the offseason!
