Crappy term. 2 years would have better - enough time for him to show his progress or lack there of.

A deal like this puts a black cloud of uncertainty over this season and relationship with the Oilers. Unless he blows the first half of the season out of the water, i bet the team lacks the faith needed to pay him as he thinks he should be paid.

He signed that low and we could only offer him 1 year? You kidding me? I would of added 500k and asked for a few more at least.

Obviously specific details are not evident, just my opinion off what is available.

What are saving money for? Perhaps a long term extension for Schultz is incoming?

Why would he want to sign a longer deal? He has a chance to go to free agency

Damn that's good money.

That's like over a million less than most of us thought he would sign for on a one year deal.

He signed that low and we could only offer him 1 year? You kidding me? I would of added 500k and asked for a few more at least.

And he and his agent would have said no, because 500k for a "few more years" doesn't equate to what he could make in free agency next year.

Do you really think the Oilers didn't pursue a wider array of options with the Petry camp?

I prefer the one year deal. He's still too much of a Jekyll and Hyde player. If his decision making becomes more disciplined, he's definitely got top pairing potential, but I think that's a pretty big IF. I'd rather not gamble with a long-term deal that would have cost north of 4 mil per.

Really happy with the caphit, gives us some flexibility contract wise next year, and should hopefully motivate Petry for a big year.
Should leave some $ for a center as well after the Schultz deal.
Good deal by the Oil.

It'll be nice having this contract off the books next off-season when we need to re-sign Yakupov, Marincin and potentially Fasth.

My thinking is that he's under contract, the cap hit is low enough for any team to acquire, and he and his new team can negotiate an extension anytime they want. A trade is still possible, even likely.

I agree, however I think he is trade bait now, more than before as previously speculated.

This one year term could be the reason we were "shopping" him. It sucks, because it appears we may lose him as a UFA for nothing. But honestly, have to think Nurse and/or Klefbom are going to be ready next year, so could have replacements on the way next year. Just sucks we could potentially lose him for no assets back.

Unless we give him 5+ he won't sign here over FA....no chance.

The Oilers could decide to go after Boychuk or wait and see who develops between Schultz and Petry.

I would be surprised if Petry was at all interested in an extension considering what just happened in FA.

Odds are come TD Petry will be a top 4 D with 1+million counting against the cap.

Or, this could even be a precursor to a deal this summer.

This is pretty clearly what Petry wanted.

Dude wants out and who can blame him really?

maybe he realizes what young ufa dmen make if they hot the open market. I am surprised that a lot more guys don't listen to their agents advice and test the market.

IMO, he easily gets 5 mill on a long term deal next summer. The cap will be going up significantly.

Ouch....

This is a "nice to know ya" signing by Petry.
Well since we are out of the playoff hunt by November, at least he may fetch us a 1st rounder at the deadline :(

I am certain this won't happen. He'll get a medium length deal at the end of this one - think 4-5 years. The fact he didn't file for arbitration tells me him and mact are working together here.
