Peterborough Petes 2024 25 Season Thread Part Ii

What do you mean by that? Your schooling package from CHL doesn’t go with you to ncaa so this doesn’t make sense

Can he really demand a full ride commitment after the season he’s had?

its more an ego thing. but i agree. youll probably remember i thought it was silly he was considered a top 5 pick in the draft but thats what the standard was. last year showed that. i woudlnt have signed him to a full ride last year. im not sure hes going to thrive under ron willson but who knows.

He’s not a Rob Wilson type of player - that’s for sure. But he needs to adapt or the Petes will be stuck playing this boring brand of hockey forever with no goal scorers and a pathetic PP.

i just dont know if hage would adapt either to be honest? he does not engage physically at all

small skill depth player at the ohl level, but he would be better then alot of the guys on the team now so.

A gamble the Peterborough Petes made at the 2024 OHL draft table may still pay off.

Alexander Hage, a player the Petes took a flyer on in the sixth-round of last year’s draft, is among 50 players scheduled to attend the Petes development camp this weekend.

Hage, who had the potential to be a first-round pick had he not expressed an interest in pursuing the NCAA route, played last season for the USHL’s Chicago Steel after attending the Petes 2024 development camp.

He will not participate in on-ice scrimmages this weekend as he’s coming off an injury, said Petes GM and VP of operations Mike Oke. He will skate separately with Petes returning sophomores Colin Fitzgerald, Blake Gowan and Genc Ula who are also working their way back from injuries which ended their rookie seasons prematurely.

The Petes coaching staff will put those players through some drills separate from the on-ice scrimmages for all other players. The scrimmages will be held on Saturday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 5 p.m. and again Sunday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Players will also be put through fitness testing on Friday afternoon at Hybrid Fitness. The on-ice scrimmages at the Peterborough Memorial Centre are open to the public.

Hage, a five-foot-eight, 165-pound forward who has made a verbal commitment to the University of Michigan, played 37 games for Chicago last season scoring six goals and adding five assists with 28 penalty minutes and a +2 rating. His brother Michael Hage, a Montreal Canadiens prospect, also played in Chicago before attending Michigan.

The Petes are hopeful Alexander, 17, will consider a move to Peterborough next season.

“Even dating back to last season when they made their decision they said their plan was to go to the USHL for a year and then re-evaluate where they were at,” said Oke. “I think this is part of their re-evaluation process. Certainly the changes with the NCAA rules would lead you to believe we are an option.”

“He’s a very talented young man,” said Petes head coach Rob Wilson. “Any time you’re increasing your skill level it’s great. He’s in the age demographic we want.”

Adam Novotny, the Petes first-round selection, eighth overall in last year’s CHL Import Draft, is currently playing for Czechia at the IIHF World U18 Hockey Championships in Texas and won’t be in attendance. Wilson and director of player personnel Pat O’Connor met with Novotny and his family and agent during a recent trip to Europe.

“I’m very optimistic,” said Wilson. “I thought we had a really great meeting with Adam and his family.”

“The focus for the family at this point is wrapping up this year,” said Oke. “They will regroup once the season is over, and after this weekend his season will be over, and evaluate what will be in his best interests next season for his development and to show NHL teams what he can do.”

Oke said he expects all of their 2025 draft picks except eighth-round choice Luke Schairer, who is committed to the U.S. National Development Team Program, at camp. Two late 2024 draft picks — Alex Smyth and Fathi Kasra will not attend due to injuries.

Oke said the message to players at development camp will be similar to the one given to potential returning players before they departed for home following the season.

“We have high expectations to take a step forward and it’s going to take a high level of commitment from everybody involved. That commitment starts with our development camp to show why you should be one of the full-time members of the Petes,” said Oke.

“This is where things get tougher,” said Wilson. “The expectations are going to be higher now and the demands are going to be a lot more on each individual.”

I'm a bit more interested in this part than the rest of the article tbh. The last bit, I hope, is a big pull for him to come over with easier access for scouts and the prospects' game.

Also, thanks for posting the whole article since it's behind the paywall

Let me dream big here for a minute…

Young-Fitzgerald-OA
Novotny-Benak-McCallum
Taylor-McGregor-Hage
Adduono-Levac-Raynor

Dzieciol, DiCunzolo

Rosters for dev camp this weekend have been announced.

I also noticed that since the draft, DiCunzolo has played a few more games and is now leading the 15UAAA with 57G, 90A, 147P in 62 games.

Players listed as attending dev camp that were not previously drafted:

33 players that were not drafted by the Petes, didn't look super close last season but it didn't seem like this many. Some notes I noticed on a few:
Cristian Giancola and Drew McLennan were both drafted by Kitchener in 2023, 131st and 191st, respectively.
Jack McHyman should immediately be signed so there can be a player from Dix Hill, New York on the team.
William Harding is the son of former Pete Mike Harding, who played from 90-94.

Must mean he’s actually interested in coming here I’d assume
Certainly the hope, but it could also be that he was invited and is not one to turn down free ice time with relatively competitive scrimmages.
But the fact that he's crossing a border to get said ice time, I'd imagine it's leaning more toward the former.

Does anyone have any standouts from morning scrimmages? I will say, it doesn't surprise me that they have forgone picking a goalie at all in this year's draft.

Thanks for this…..it has saved me from looking some of these FAs up. It’s been pretty fast and physical. I’ll wait until after these afternoon scrimmages to give some feedback.

Is Lock even a sure thing to be good enough to make this team? Struggled to stay in the Dubuque lineup and had 4 points in 27 games. Just because a player with US options wants to come here doesn't inherently mean they should be a lock for a spot (pun fully intended).

He didn’t stand out enough to warrant bumping out a younger guy - IMO.

Some quick thoughts…

McGregor - fast as hell, good skill, sometimes trying to do too much. Overpassing a little trying to get his teammates involved. Overall it’s easy to see the sky high potential. He will thrive at main camp when he has more skilled players on his line. Going to be fun.

Raynor - skating + compete level off the charts. Nice goal this afternoon. Should chip in some offence as soon as next season.

Adduono - very skilled and smart. Puck follows him around the ice and made lots of nice plays. Not the biggest kid. I think they should sign him.

DiCunzolo - see above. Skilled and smart. Makes great plays with the puck and has never seen a cross check he doesn’t like. Again, not very big. But they totally should sign him… wouldn’t risk losing him.

Dzieciol - Big kid, decent skater, works hard. Good showing for the U18 top pick. A player you can plug into the lineup and trust to do the safe play. Wilson likely tries to mold him into his new Jax Dubois.

Sturgeon - REALLY like this kid. Best defenceman out there IMO. He’s big, long reach and his skating allows him to defend well off the rush. I’m a fan. He would make my team.

Perreault - very smooth out there for a D. Good skills and skating. Right handed Declan Chisholm? Looked to have hurt his knee on a hit this afternoon.

Final Camp Leaders:
  • Pacey Adduono (3G, 2A)
  • Owen Hunks (3G, 1A)
  • Ryan Wercholaz (2G, 2A)
  • Chase MacKay (1G, 3A)
  • Santiago Jimenes (2G, 1A)
  • Brandt Rooyakkers (1G, 2A)
  • Adam Levac (1G, 2A)
  • Kaden McGregor (3A)

Have to say I agree with the points above. Wouldn't say there was a player that stood well out above the rest, but Adduono looked good for sure. DiCunzolo had an understated weekend on the score sheet, but I agree that he's a player you sign to not lose, too much upside. McGregor also wasn't massive on the score sheet, but hard to deny the talent is available to him. It should be a very interesting and competitive training camp when it rolls around.

Tout, Rooyakkers and McKay looked good for players attending there first OHL camp. I’d like to see kept close playing for that U18 Petes team. Wonder if they could land Doxtator for that team too.

I agree with most of what you have here @Petes, but I’m not totally sold on Sturgeon. Love the size and he uses his reach well but I’m concerned about his ability to defend against speed on the rush and on the forecheck. I will definitely have an eye on him at main camp to see how he looks.

The points are definitely deceiving for scrimmage play. It was nice to actually watch them play in person though, to give it the "eye-test".
Some of the stronger FA players were 2007s......Wercholaz, Hunks, Short. It's extra ice-time for these guys but as 07s they would need to crack the Petes' lineup this year and I can't see that happening. So impressed with Wercholaz......he was the smallest player on the ice but laid the most hits, created so many plays on the attack and his vision was top shelf - if he's 3 or 4 inches taller, he's an OHL regular.

I liked Brooks (12th Rd, 2024) in the morning scrimmages yesterday - played with lots of energy, created turnovers and always looked to make the smart play when he had the puck. He seemed to run out of steam by the afternoon scrimmages IMO and I didn't get down today to watch.

I think the Petes have to like what Dzieciol showed them. He really look like a Petes' style player - good motor, smart at both ends of the rink and competes like his life depends on it.

The Petes obviously sign McGregor, Raynor and DiCunzolo.
McGregor came as advertised - fast, strong and a nose for the net.
Raynor seems to get to top speed after two strides and his is lightning quick. He is slippery on the attack and very capable of handling the puck even at top speed.
DiCunzolo should be a fan favourite. He works hard at both ends and is like a dog on a bone when it comes to battling for pucks. His speed should create lots of offense for the Petes in the future.

Gavin Lock........I was not impressed tbh. He played like a guy who came for the ice-time and worked harder when his team was on offense. His body language was not like that of a guy trying to impress the GM and coaches - he mouthed "Oh my God" when his teammate didn't get a pass from him that was an inaccurate pass. There were deep sighs and head hanging when he returned to the bench after some shifts as well.
If you compare him to a guy like Adam Levac (who is a year younger and about the same size). Levac has obviously been well-coached and he was so good at both ends of the ice and shared the puck with his teammates on the attack. When Levac turned a puck over he didn't shake his head; he busted his ass to get back and support his defense and try to retrieve the puck.......that's the type of guy you want in a Petes' uniform.

Adduono doesn't look like much but his IQ is top end, he is a great playmaker, and he is a fast skater who is so smooth it looks effortless. I hope they sign him; he actually reminds me of Adam Benak 👀

I agree here, need to see how he handles the main camp. One thing I thought a few times is that you could tell Levac had played up with the main team, he just had that extra step in pace on most of the other players there. He just got where he was going ahead and was everywhere. Need to see how Sturgeon does against a full line against him at that speed. If he can handle that well, you've got a winner, if they can dance around him, that's a problem.

DiCunzolo should be a fan favourite. He works hard at both ends and is like a dog on a bone when it comes to battling for pucks. His speed should create lots of offense for the Petes in the future.
If I didn't know ahead of time and someone asked me which former Pete coached him, Kaleta would have been one of, if not my first pick. Will need to see how he handles the bigger competition, but if he can transition that well, I can't see how he isn't a fan favourite.

Have to agree, I was hopeful for more from him being one of the older players there, but at the moment, I would take some of the younger kids over him for sure. Did find it a little funny that they put all the American kids on the same team though.

I take Adduono over Lock if it came down to the two.
