Peterborough Petes 2024 25 Season Thread Part Ii

Here is a “rough” breakdown of each teams “roster” this season by birth year.

I basically took anyone who suited up 10 games or more with a team and was still their property after the trade deadline. We don’t know how many of the 2005s will be returning to the OHL next season and with the possibility that some of the 2006s may leave for the NCAA (like Mews) we can’t really make accurate predictions about possible trade targets……but that’s never stopped me before!

IMO the highlighted teams are good trade partners for the Petes.
They have extra 2005s (OA candidates), 2006s (veterans who are possible OAs in 2026-2027) and/or are thin on 2007s.

Oke knows that he needs to bring in older players this season to strengthen the lineup.

I believe that when it comes to forwards the Petes are very thin at RW. It would be great to target OA and/or 2006 RWs if at all possible. Wilson has a number of RH centers who can play on the wing so that’s always a possibility too.

Not sure what Oke will do with the OA situation…….Bowen will be traded for sure but who do you keep from Page, Faulkner and Jenken? At least one of these 3 will be kept IMO; I’m just not sure which one…….it could end up being a competition starting in training camp.

Sudbury and Kingston look like good spots to target OAs. Keep in mind Oke doesn’t want to blow the bank on a one year addition but it is important that he acquires guys with character and offensive upside.

Sudbury are probably more likely to make deals now that Mews is headed to Michigan.

  • Pharand and Coughlan are RWs that have offensive upside…...not sure of character or cost of these guys but they would fit nicely into the lineup.

Kingston will have extra OAs and there are a few interesting options……
  • Soto is a RW that has offensive upside
  • Cal Uens (RD) is smaller but plays with some bite and has good offensive instincts
  • Maleek McGowan (LD) is a solid all-round Dman who would be a great stabilizer for the Petes young group on defense.

Erie’s OA options……
  • Dylan Edwards is a smaller RW with good offensive skills (although his 2008 brother played a handful of games in Erie this season so Dylan may prefer to stay)
  • Nathan Sauder (RD) a good-sized Dman who is great in his own end (led Erie with +27)
  • Alexis Daviault (LD) is a a little smaller than Sauder but more offense (36pts) and less defense (worst on Erie with – 27).

Oshawa’s OA options……
  • Matthew Buckley is a smaller RW with decent skills.

Windsor’s OA options……
  • Wyatt Kennedy is a big RD who is hard to play against.

I still have no idea what the OA market will look like and with the Petes draft cupboard Oke will have to be shrewd in his deals. He does have extra 3rds and an extra 5th in 2027 and you know that he is stockpiling those 15th rd picks in 2028 for something special.

I know we took player heavy deals when we sold but it is pretty funny looking at how relatively thin our draft pick cupboard is considering the last 2 seasons we have had lol

Some promising words from DiCunzolo! Would be absolutely massive if he reports and we would finally end the drought of not being able to sign a super high end American player! Hopefully he puts pen to paper

He came in March with his former coach Patrick Kaleta (who is a former Pete) and visited the PMC and saw a game.
He was excited about the possibility of playing for the Petes.
I'm confident he will sign with the Petes.

Hopefully someone will take Addy for a pick or two but idk
The Addy stance I don't quite agree with. Playing through a shoulder injury is not easy at all. He was starting to catch fire around the time he fought that Soo player. There was much to like there as his confidence was growing and he started scoring. He will need to come in and earn his spot this year though.

All encouraging things for sure but until the team confirms he's signed it's still always up in the air.

On that note though, does anyone know what the actual date is for being able to officially sign players? I assume May 1st?

And Caden Taylor ranked ahead of Carson Cameron. You would almost think the Central Scouts aren't reading this forum.
These rankings are for North American skaters only.........so it does not include North American goalies and any International players.
224 players will be selected in total at the NHL draft.
The four NHL Central scouting ranking lists include 364 skaters and 47 goalies in total........so 411 players and only 224 get drafted.

Given where these Petes are ranked, it probably means it's a crapshoot as to whether they get drafted, although Cameron will likely get drafted.
The NHL draft is much like the OHL priority draft IMO........You can easily identify to top 100ish guys that will get picked at some point but then there is large group of players that are ranked all over the place for the different teams and there are just 7 rounds.

Just saw Mark Seidel's post on X (North American Independent Central Scouting) with some of the picks by each OHL team that he liked.
Here is what he had for the Petes....

Peterborough
- Luke Schairer – Schairer was taken 144th overall and was the #7 ranked Player on our “add on” list. Schairer has been at the US-NTDP Under 17 Program and he will go back again this year but if big, solid RD shows up in Peterborough before he goes to Boston University, it’ll be a steal.

- Eric Wood – Taken 164th overall – Was 77th on our list. The RD for Sun County was one of the key players for that Team and showed he can have clean exits and make plays throughout the year

- Kieran Raynor – Taken 27th overall and was 29th on our list. Raynor played up last year & was a revelation on a solid Niagara ’08 Team and was touted as a Top 10 pick coming into this year. Although his offensive production wasn’t what was expected, Raynor will prove to be a perfect 2nd round pick that gives maximum effort on every shift & is hard to play against

Some more comments on the Petes' draft from Kris Leblanc (KLeb Scouting)

Peterborough McGregor - 1st overall for a reason, dog on a bone mentality

Raynor - first round talent, he’s a centre but him and McGregor on a line together…..

Perreault - silky puck moving dman, great hockey IQ

Dicunzolo - No notes (Shattuck -St. Mary’s)

Or... and stick with me, we draft two this year to bring in.
Best option is we use our 2nd round pick on a 2008 born 2 way/puck moving defencemen that doesn't necessarily have to report right away. Could be a bit of a longer term play (1 or 2 years). Kaiser is not needed with how little upside he brings

Ula-Cameron
Strohack-OA
Ladds-Gowan
Perreault

And that closes out the U18 draft for the Petes, having not picked a goaltender (which should surprise no one).

Just saw this afternoon that Ryerson Edgar may not be reporting to IceDogs.. at first glance it sure feels like it might be worth it for Oke and co to try and make a deal for him at the right cost?
