Peterborough Petes 2024 25 Season Thread Part Ii

Raynor was a great pick.
Didn't know much about Perreault. Watched some YT and he has good feet and puck skills.
Dicunzolo sounds fun. Skilled and an agitator by the sounds of it.

Really happy with this draft class. McGregor and Raynor should contribute right away. Perreault sounds like he has high upside and then you have three flyer picks who could impact the team in DiCunzolo, Schairer and Adduono.

I am excited that this year's priority draft, with a record number of Americans selected (81), is happening when the Petes are on the upswing in their development cycle. You can bet that all 81 US players and their families are having some serious conversations today that will continue over the next couple months, given the new CHL/NCAA rules. With the greater number of US players selected there are more teammates being selected which means discussions like.......

(Gerry DiCunzolo): "Aw, come on Mom and Dad.........Hagan is going to Barrie and Braden is going to play in Windsor......why can't I go to play for the Petes?!"
(Gerry leaves the room, upset and mutters under his breath): "The OHL is the best junior league in the world and you are killing my hockey dreams. I wish Mr. and Mrs. Harper or Mr. and Mrs. Horton were my parents"

(Mr. DiCunzolo to his wife): "Honey, I know that you love the fact that our boy scored over 2 PPG this year and sure he could probably score 200 points next year at Shattuck-St. Mary's but the only way he gets better is if he goes to the OHL and is challenged playing against better players. You know this Petes team won the OHL championship in 2023 and they are building a strong team to contend in 2026-2027."...........and, scene.
The names and situations used in the scene above are purely hypothetical.......I actually expect DiCunzolo will be coming to Peterborough.

What I'm saying is that parents and teammates will be putting their heads together to discuss their options.
Training camps around the OHL will be more competitive than ever with more US players involved.
Check this out; US teams with multiple players selected:

7 players from
Detroit Little Caesar's

6 players selected from
Chicago Mission,
Shattuck-St. Mary’s School,
Chicago Reapers,
Pittsburgh Penguins Elite,
Mount St. Charles Academy

5 players from
Detroit Honeybaked

3 players from
Buffalo Jr. Sabres
Bishop Kearney's Selects
Florida Alliance

2 players from
Detroit Victory Honda
Fox Motors
New Jersey Rockets
Oakland Jr. Grizzlies
Ohio Blue Jackets

I love that Oke took shots at two players who are 2008 born and playing in the US.

Pacey Adduono is born in Thunder Bay but has played Prep school hockey in Indiana the last two years and is committed to U Mass in 2027-2028.
Luke Schairer is an American kid who played USNTDP this year and is committed to Boston U in 2027-2028
I'm assuming that both schools and these players would benefit by delaying these commitments to the following year, especially if they are developing by playing top minutes in the OHL in 2027-2028 rather than limited minutes with their NCAA team.

Maybe Luke Schairer (RD) stays in the USNTDP another year and then comes to the Petes in 2026-2027 and gets paired with fellow American Genc Ula (LD).
Or maybe, after losing twice to Colin Fitzgerald and Blake Gowan's Team Canada Red at the U17 World challenge in November, he's anxious to join them in Peterborough this year?

He did score a really nice OT goal in the quarter-finals to knock off Czechia...........

Let's not forget that the Petes will be hosting the 2026 Connor McDavid OHL Top Prospects Game for players eligible for the 2026 NHL draft.

When was the last time the Petes got a guy from the states who was committed to a school? Seems to never happen

appreciate all of your work on this @OMEGARAZER

only 137 sleeps until the first day of on-ice scrimmages at training camp!

That landscape is pretty different now with the NCAA rule change. I imagine it'll still take a fair bit of convincing though, which is why I think it could be pretty risky to use the 2nd overall import pick on Benak who's playing for Youngstown already. Not saying it'd be impossible to convince him if Novotny comes over as well but it's not as though he's just playing somewhere to play somewhere.

You don’t take anyone who isn’t 100 percent committed to playing here next year.

100%........can't afford to miss on that #2 overall pick in the import draft

The nice thing about picking #2 is that there is less chance that someone scoops the guy you are interested in.
Oke and the coaches have already been in contact with players they are interested in at #2 as well as families/agents so I'm sure they have a sense of who will or won't come.

I do hope that the talk of all these new recruits, with Import/U18 drafts still to come, has got the attention of Petes players who are coming back. They should be excited about the direction of the team but also looking over their shoulder and realizing that they need to be working hard this off-season to ensure they are ready to hit the ground skating come September.

Aiden Young (07) - Colin Fitzgerald (08) - Chase Coughlan (05)

Adam Novotny (07) - Kaden McGregor (09) - Braydon McCallum (06)

Caden Taylor (07) - Adam Levac (08) - Import Pick (NA)

Johnny Brooks (08) - Ben Brunton (08) - Kieran Raynor (09)

Coughlan in a Pete's jersey would be great. He play's Pete's hockey. My OA wish list:
Coughlan SBY (Another McCallum)
McGowan KIN (Incredible skater)
Interested in Pharand SBY if he is back.

Lineup:

Novotny - Fitzy - Coughlan
Taylor - McCallum - Import 1.2
Raynor - Young - McGreggor
Dicunzolo - Levac - Addy

McGowan - Cameron
Ula - Gowan
Strohack - Ladds/Perreault

Rye
Lee-Stack

Trade: Bowen and Johnston. If you can get anything for Parish you do so as well. Will we see one of our 07's get dealt to help us upgrade?

I would think you sign him right away and not let the thought of school influence him.
We never sign or come this close to actually signing one of the top Americans in a draft class. We need to get this one done, sure feels like we have the inside track since it seems like he already came and met in March. Would go a long way to help try and close out this rebuild adding an elite level talent like DiCunzolo in the third round!
