Peter Laviolette

  • HFBoards is doing server maintenance Thursday March 13th at 9 AM GMT 5 AM EDT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. We expect to have this issue solved once the maintenance is complete.
  • We are currently aware of "log in/security error" issues that are affecting some users. We apologize and ask for your patience as we try to get these issues fixed.

There's clearly a theme with Laviolette and his recent win now-teams falling off. He's always been a coach who gives a spark and has a shorter shelf life, but feels like it's getting worse.

Preds won the Presidents Trophy and never looked the same since. Rangers in that same boat now.

Some vets falling off a cliff, like Subban, Kreider. Johansen and Zibanejad both getting worse during his tenure.

Vets falling off, which is natural as they age. But the young guys, who were higher picks, are either traded away or just aren’t that good. How many top ten picks in the last 6-7 years did the Rangers miss in?

Sure, but the guys I mentioned are all 33 or younger at the time. What makes it weird is they go from being good to awful in a very short span. Could be a coincidence, but eh. I wouldn't be surprised if some guys start taking it easy in the off-season after giving everything they had in a great year under Lavi.

And yeah, it's unfortunate.

Laviolette has perhaps the most well established success pattern in the whole League.

For reasons unknown to me he gives the team spark in his first season.

Can somewhat maintain the level in second season but cracks start to emerge.

Under performs horribly compared to the elevated expectations in season three and is canned.

I think Rangers are at least the fourth example of this pattern. I cannot fathom how anyone would expect something else from him and smart GM should expect to get rid of him after two seasons.
