I'm a Getzlaf apologist, so I'm probably a bit biased. But Getz has been a better then a point per game guy for a long time. Yes he had a crap year last year but I don't think you can sit there and seriously say that he is trying to suck and now wants a big contract. I know Teemu was kidding but for all the Getz hate I hear in the stands I feel like I should back my boy up a little. I am shocked at how many people would rather keep Getz over perry on message boards though, considering people give him so much flack. I wanna keep both but have a feeling Perry is gone.

we know how dominant he can be, and our biggest need is C. big powerforward #1 C's dont grow on trees. basically the only way to get them is to draft them and develop them yourself. that's why if we have to keep one, we're picking getzy. we also have a lot more NHL ready or on the cusp of NHL ready winger prospects than center prospects

If it was one of those "would sign with Toronto but not Anaheim type of situations", I would do it. Otherwise, there is not a chance in hell I would trade a signed Kessel for a player who could very easily walk at the end of the year.

If Toronto doesn't make the Playoffs in the next 2 years I can see Kessel considerin Anaheim when he is a UFA. No media...should work well for him.

What he said. You don't win with players like Kessel. And his contract situation isn't any better. And he might be even more of a danger to re-sign because he has a history of being difficult to sign.

doesn't matter. we at least got a good asset for perry instead of losing him for nothing. he's definitely the best that we can get for an UNSIGNED perry. if we're worried about not being able to resign kessel we can still flip him at the next deadline.

look at what kovalchuk and hossa returned.. basically nothing. what we get in kessel is at least a proven commodity not to mention he'd help with our playoff run vs draft picks or non-roster player/prospects

Pittsburgh can probably offer one of the worst packages of any team in the NHL for Perry. I wouldn't get my hopes up if I'm a fan of the Penguins.

For some reason I really am not concerned with either of them re-signing. I believe Getzlaf is pretty much a lock and that will get done the next time Bob Murray and Getzlaf's agent meet.

Also I am 80% sure Perry is signed in the next 3-4 weeks. If he isn't by then I hit the panic button.

It is clear that Anaheim can not offer the same type of money than they would get in free agency, but Anaheim can offer many other things there other teams do not have. As far as I read and saw about Perry, and other forum members mentioned this already, I think for his character a low key hockey market is much better than most Canadian teams etc.

I also remember a interview when Bobby Ryan prolonged his contract how he talked with Getzlaf and Perry about their thoughts, because he would not have signed the extension if they would have said "nope, we are out of here as soon we can", this is probably also an factor.

In any case, next year Anaheim is going to be quite different, the only question is if they will have the RPG cornerstones or not.

I don't care about losing him for nothing. First of all a playoff run (assuming we stay in position) is worth something to me. Also, I would rather trade Perry for a pick than Kessel. Even if it's just a third or something.

I'd only trade Perry for Kessel at the draft with the intention of re-trading Kessel. At least then the Leafs would have the time between the draft and July 1 to sign. Obviously risky for Toronto if he doesn't resign.

But then you have to hold him in the meantime while you look to flip him. All the while cap space is being used up during free agency, right when cap space is most important (assuming you are in the mix for signing/re-signing anyone big. AND you risk that his value might depreciate did to injury or just general suckiness.

I just don't believe in acquiring something solely with the intention it's flipping it right around. Only if it ifs an ancillary piece and you still get the main piece that you really want.

The Ducks have 28.5M in cap space this summer, and you can go over the cap by about 6.5M during the summer months. Kessel with a 5.4M hit won't mean a thing. He can be flipped at the draft before free agency as well. If you really see the Ducks as a cap team where that cap space would ever actually matter then they are re-signing Perry regardless though.

Trading Perry for a 3rd is essentially something you're flipping. You don't get to keep the 3rd, you flip it for a player at the draft. A player who most likely will never see the NHL. And Kessel will be worth a 1st + unless there's a catastrophic injury. He's a damn good scoring winger.

you're telling me you'd rather trade perry for only a 3rd then have kessel.. a 40 goal scoring winger..

you must really hate the guy.. regardless of whether he's soft or not, he's a sniper that provides offensive and can lessen the blow of perry leaving.. is that 3rd round pick going to score goals?

With the trade deadline being April 3 I would hope neither side is waiting until after March. Especially since he continues to give off positive vibes about staying. Both sides need to Git-R-Done!

Could be something as simple as his agent has yet to meet with Bob Murray. Right now all we know is he really wants to stay. That, for now, is good enough for me. Means a contract will get done.
