Yes indeed he is a dumbass. And yes you're right, but consider all these events happened that summer:
1. Kyle Dubas came on board as the new Pens GM and Penguins had a major goalie decision to make with Jarry becoming UFA
2. Helle was reported to be on the trade block / his agent was spreading rumors he wanted out while he was waiting for his extension
3. This all happened weeks before the Karlsson trade
Dubas gave up a 1st+2nd to get EK65. If he was truly available, maybe Helle's value wasn't far off that.
Unfortunately, we got the Kyle Dubas special (completely neglect the goalie position, and completely butcher 10 figure deals for star players).

I'm sure they'll stumble upon a fantastic goaltender out of nowhere. When was the last time they had goaltender issues? 3 years at the tail end of Richter's career while their 10th overall draft pick goalie got catastrophic nerve damage and had to retire, before their 7th rounder from the previous draft showed up after the lockout and immediately was one of the best goalies in the league?
The Rangers have to either self rent him or trade him at the deadline. You cannot allocate that kind of cap to a goalie. If he gets hurt at any point after the trade deadline, your season is over. You're not winning anything with $13M in dead cap going into the playoffs with no ability to use the LTIR to bring anyone in. They simply can't do it.
The demands of these guys is getting out of control and someone needs to remind them that they play in a hard cap sport. Go play baseball if you want $20M+ a year or hold out for another year to get your 55/45 revenue split. You're in the wrong sport, brother.
I salivate at the potential return Igor Shesterkin could bring at the deadline at $5.6 or whatever he's making, even if just a rental. Call me a huge proponent of trading him for the motherlode to whatever stupid team on a mini hot streak with a little cap space that thinks they're a goaltender away.
He can't steal games in the playoffs, he's demonstrated that. He'll give you a .930% and then let in a back breaker shit goal. The Stanley Cup doesn't care about save percentage, it only cares about how many got past you versus the other team. I don't care how good his numbers are, he let up some highly suspect goals in the Florida series. The amazing saves you see on highlight reels are a complete wash when goals like the one last night or specific goals from last years ECF get past you.
Trade this dude and his all about me attitude. Or, do what should've been done in 2006, and create a state income tax leveling system so that we don't have to watch a Florida or Vegas team in the finals every f***ing year. I guarantee you he takes the original offer if he didn't have to give half a million per year of it to New York state.
With the snap of a finger the NHL could implement a cap penalty on teams in no-income tax states. Whatever the average state income tax is of all states that own an NHL team gets added to the player's cap hit. Completely level the playing field. E.g. when Vegas offers Shesterkin the same $11x8 and he accepts. They pay $11 per but the cap hit is $11.5 or whatever the league average state income tax is.

I am going to be honest I think the Habs would need him.....and its sad cause Carey Price is still on the books.....

It's really not, you have to pay the best players in the league.
1.He's in his prime
2.His playoff stats are amazing
3.He has the hardware to back him up
At the end of the day he is MINIMUM market worth 11 million, that is the minimum that basically most teams would pay him (unless they have the 2-4 guys near his skill level in net already). You're not going to lose anything by giving him an "extra" 1-2 million, that's not the difference between winning the cup and not.
If it were all the best players in the league should be getting flamed for taking 12+million.
Bobrovsky literally just won a cup, Price willed a mediocre team to the cup finals.
If you think trying to nickle and dime him over 1-2 mill because he has let in a few poor goals you must've missed some of the atrocious performances of many of the guys making 10+ million dollars.

Shesterkin is levels above most of the goalies on this planet.
Without him the Rangers are a bubble team. Shit at 5v5 and their defense is awful. Have you seen how many grade A chances they give up?

Even if he's not "$3M+ better" how many goalies are available that are close to Hellebuyck or Shesterkin? Exactly.
Before the Buffalo game Shesterkin had over +10 GSAX.
He is often forced to stand on his head (which is insane, that team shouldn't be that bad defensively) and basically wills the team to wins.
Yeah it's pretty rare you lose the best player in the league at any position over money and then end up better.

Which is A LOT for a goalie but Shesty is one of the most valuable players in this league. He knows that the team is f***ed without him.
Also the more we spend on him the less we spend on Goodrow's, Trouba's, Nemeth's etc.

Kinda. If he walks and another team signs him for $13Mx7, and he only has 4 more great years in him, that's still 4 years where the Rangers look really bad for letting him walk.

I was just about to ask if someone could bring up a player in another position on a different team and somehow try to compare that player with the player being discussed in this thread.
The problem I had was that I didn't want to post it because they have nothing in common with one another and it wouldn't make sense and would look stupid, luckily neither of those things stopped you from posting this.

They have something in common; they both would take up a significant percentage of the allotted salary cap each team has to use. How the rest of the roster is filled out is dictated by those contracts over 10% of the cap in a league where teams have a larger roster.
The Leafs would be significantly better in the playoffs with a G the caliber of IS over a winger the caliber of MM.
Hellebuyck got $8.5m. The league lost their damn minds after Bob won the Cup. If some other Aiden Hill wins it next year goalie prices will fall again. Too bad for the Rangers.
They have a lot to do with each other, they both are (going to be) very high paid players in the NHL.
Marner sucks in the playoffs, Shesterkin is a God.
As a Leafs fan I'd HAPPILY pay Shesty 12-13 mill to come here considering he has earned it. Mitch being a whiny entitled soft puke who will want similar money while never producing in the playoffs is a good comparison because he will easy get 10-11 mill despite being atrocious in the playoffs.
Helle has been very up and very down in the playoffs.
He has one playoffs where he was over 930 save percentage, 2 where he was ok (913, 904), 2 where he was good (917/922) and 2 where he was atrocious.
Shesterkin is 3/3 in his playoffs basically playing at 930 level every one.
He surpassed Helle.
