People who think Nathan Mackinnon is the best player in the world, can we all just be kind of agree that… he’s not?

Because I agree that Mac is not the best player in the world. You probly have no problem calling Makar the McDavid of defencemen. Well, Quinn Hughes is much better than Makar right now. Hughes is simply the best player in the world. Hughes prevents a large amount of goals because he is elite in the d zone, plus he scores at a 100 point pace.

Hahahaha Quinnifer doesn't even PK and plays against 2nd and 3rd lines the majority of the time. He gets isolated minutes. He's not even top 5 in the NHL gtfo with that bs

Hughes literally matches teams 3rd lines while Makar matches the best players on every team. There is literal statistical evidence of this happening. Quinn Hughes is not better than Makar. He's not better than Werenski. He's a product of being sheltered. But keep thinking what you want as you flail your way into another failed season behind the "leadership" of Quinn Hughes.

Would be curious to see the even strength points in this scenario. Also curious about those stats in series-clinching games as well. It's interesting that even with all those extra points McDavid's teams only managed 2 more wins.

Either way, career stats miss the point I think. I don't think anyone would deny McDavid has/will have the more prolific career and all of his career numbers will dwarf Mack. I think the main argument is that the majority of the last 2-3 years (yes I know he won the Conn Smythe), MacKinnon has been at or above McDavid most of that stretch which is what the thread title is alluding to.

It's Mack's peak and I think McDavid will peak similarly in a couple years, but I don't think it's incorrect to say that MacKinnon has been the most dominant player in the league for long stretches during his career.

Let's just hope for a rematch this spring.

I also don't get people thinking Avs fans put MacKinnon above McDavid. There are only two players I think are better than Mack in the league. McDavid and Makar. And Draisaitl is nipping on Mack's heels.

Yeah, it is wrong. Until 2022, there was a chance for Mac to close the regular season gap with an era best playoff run. Since 2022, McDavid set a higher bar in the playoffs while putting up arguably the best regular season since Wayne/Mario. Mac and Kucherov certainly took some of the shine off of that season with their 23/24 seasons but overall, McDavid was still better last year.

If Mac matches McDavid's recent playoff run while McDavid regresses then it gets closer than it is now.

MacKinnon is great, but I think it would be a very minority opinion that he is the best player in the world. Even in an article on The Athletic today they reference MacKinnon casually calling McDavid the best player in the world and saying "it's obvious" as to why.

Every single top player leaves you wanting a little more in some areas of their game. They just dominate the stat sheet where it doesn't matter and you learn to live with it because points and winning matters.

If you go back to a top player in the last 15 years to say this guy was sound and impacted every area of the rink, it's probably Crosby and that's it.

The only guy I can honestly think of was Peter Forsberg. And even then, I was left wanting him to have more health. A monster in every facet of the ice, when he could actually stay on it.

There isn't an active NHLer that will match Crosby's career. He is the most complete and consistent player of our generation with years of team and individual success to back it up.

He is the best player of our generation. I doubt anyone currently playing even comes close, not MacKinnon, not McDavid.

That's a really good one. Forsberg's flaw was obviously his health. I always felt like it took him a bit to really get going every time there was an issue, but once he was going, he was a monster who did everything.
