People owe Eric Tulsky an apology

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Exactly they lost all 3. Stop making excuses for the Canes.

You claimed that Columbus had the reputation of "No one wants to play there" (which I couldn't tell you if it was true or not) and then asked why Carolina doesn't have the same reputation. And I provided you an answer based on the players you picked.

Rantanen didn't want to be there because he couldn't see himself playing Carolina's system for 8 years.

Guentzel did want to be there, but Carolina's management tried to drag out negotiations to lower his price and it ended up biting them in the ass.

Necas was traded, so he didn't even leave voluntarily.

Some of you posters are crazy. People have been busting the Canes for years for not going for it and seeking that high end talent to get them over the hump. They tried with Guentzel and with Rantanen and both chose to not resign. That is each player's right. Now posters are all over the Canes for having tried. Make up your minds! Do you want a timid GM who sits on assets or a gunslinger who goes all in every year and then the cupboard is bare or something in between?.

No he was not a significant piece of the return at all. Hall was acquired 100% independently of Rantanen/Necas for a draft pick, it was only combined with the other trade so Chicago could eat some of Rantanen's salary. Trying to include Hall in the discussion is just a flat out terrible take.

Ya, but that salary reduction made him a more attractive trade target at the deadline.

Moneyball-brain at its peak and a loser philosophy. Since the 05 lockout how many cups were won by "stay in the race" teams? St. Louis in 2018?

Canes have the players and assets to really push for a deep run and I feel bad for their fans that ownership seems content with just being the 8th best team in the league in perpetuity

You do realize that the Canes won the Cup in your moneyball timeframe? They also have done really well since 2019 and have demonstrated a solid chance at the prize every year. A Cup, three conference finals and two second round appearances is pretty damn good if you ask most Carolina fans. "Stay in the race" seems to work well for us, despite you characterizing this as a loser philosophy.

2006 Cup
2009 Conf final
Drought
2019 conf final
2020 First round
2021 2nd round
2022 2nd round
2023 Conf final
2024 2nd round

When the Jackets had multiple FAs that would not sign, there were threads about why nobody wanted to be there. It was a running narrative for quite a while.

Why does Carolina not get this treatment?

BTW, I think both are great places to live, just thinking about the free pass the Canes are getting here?

My take is that a lot of the elite talent want to crank out the points, defense be damned, because that usually turns into higher contracts for them. The "points first" players do not thrive in a defense oriented system like RBA runs in Carolina. Couple that with a non-traditional market and it is harder to convince top free agent talent to sign here. If Tampa had not unloaded Sergachev to Utah at the last minute, they could not have afforded Guentzel (cough, cough - tampering) and he likely would have signed with the Canes.

You could always trade for players that do want to re-sign. I mean that's also an option.

All things considered I think Tulsky did an OK job.

If he "deserves an apology" so does the Colorado GM, who was getting raked over the coals immediately after the initial deal.

Reading between the lines, it seems like it's Canes fans like OP who really want the apology. Have to imagine they were already sick of the same tired tropes being trotted out to disrespect their franchise, and the backlash about their handling of the Rantanen/Guentzel situations pushed them over the edge.

On the one hand, Rantanen is wildly overrated, is an elite co-star and not worth his contract.

On the other hand, carolina still lacks the elite talent up front to be considered a threat.
I suppose getting away from Rantanen kept their cap space so they could at least take a swing on another elite player if one becomes available.

You could also defend him for trying. You never know how the player will be. At least Tulsky understands that they need a true game breaker

That's the problem with the "sustainable contender" BS, it's always looking forward and never now. They were in a position to add a lot this year and they didn't.

Their expectations should be to win a cup. They have not even won a conference finals game.
Smh I told everyone they should've picked up Crosby from the retirement home.

GMs dont get an A for effort. The Rantanen saga was an absolute failure by Tulsky, but mainly because he is a hockey outsider. He's not part of the longtime old boys club, which may have afforded him more access/vetting of Rantanen if he were. At the end of the day, you got a dwarf in Stankhoven who probably maxes out as a low end 2nd liner and a couple 1st round lotto tickets that are more likely to be used as trade chips. Goaltening continues to be crap and the forwards still are not fear inducing. Dundon is the problem. Im grateful that Viola hands Zuto the keys to the car and gtfo's.
