Of course they are. But this probably accurate to the general population of the United States.
The general population of the United States probably says some funny shit when asked what they think NFL team names are based on logos, too. It's really not that deep.

when people wonder why the NHL isn't on prime time tv on prime channels or why the salary cap is what it is compared to other leagues.... This is why.
The same could be done with other pro league.

I thought the lady calling the Red Wings the "Chariots" was making a Ben Chiarot joke at first lol
Was pretty impress with Ontario being Canada's capital.....

NBA logos you say? Somehow I doubt that

nba-chart-11.webp

Wow, i guess it never struck me that almost all NBA teams have their full name on the logo.

They don’t. That graphic specifically includes a word mark for every logo. The more common versions don’t have those word marks, and only 8 or 9 of them actually have one built in (depending on how you see the Clippers).

In the NHL it’s 8 including LA.

It was filmed in Toronto, so…
Then imagine it being filmed in bumf*** Montana!

I would not be able to name half of the NBA teams. I have never followed the NBA though.

Honestly? I’d expect the results to be about the same. Finding people who don’t follow sports is not hard. Sports fans seriously overestimate how many people care about sports.

The difference is they could easily have found someone in Toronto to rattle off all 32 names on sight, while it would be a challenge to find that person in small town Montana (though they probably exist and are probably a huge sports nerd).

Fair enough, but case in point about how it’s easy to find someone who can’t name teams on sight. I’m sure you would walk right past a lot of NBA superstars and not know who they were, same as a lot of people across North America could sit next to Connor McDavid on the train and have no clue who he is.

To be fair, these kind of channels always find and display the worst/most comical answers for entertainment.

I remember a college professor of mine showing the class a clip of The Daily Show interviewing people on the street asking random (incredibly basic) questions on geography. Questions like “what nation borders the US to the north?” Everyone was an idiot.

After ten minutes of everyone chiming in about ignorance, the education system, etc, I said something like “well yes, but clearly this is an entertainment program and they’re not going to feature all of the people (the majority) capable of answering these types of questions.”

He was absolutely flabbergasted that I could possibly think what we watching (100% of people being absolutely clueless) was not an accurate representation of the general population. As if all of the smart people in the world existed in this small lecture hall and everyone else was an idiot.

I could walk past a bunch of hockey players and not know who they are. Including half of the oilers!

Well the blackhawks are still called the blackhawks, so I’m guessing no.

Maybe they are still called the Blackhawks because it's not a pejorative term for natives, and at least attempts to honor a venerated war chief from a tribe that still live in Illinois. I'd think that probably makes it somewhat difficult to convince a lot of people that it's just a racist epithet, like the Redskins or Indians.

On the other hand, I think convincing people that St Louis should be renamed The Glee Club would be easier than falling off a bike.

Yet, their logo is. And optically that comes across a lot clearer then the meaning behind the name, that you would have to research to understand it’s not intentional racism.

I’m all honestly I’m indifferent, and have always loved those jerseys. But I also used to wear t shirts that depicted skulls, in headdresses, because I thought they looked cool. After talking with my native friends, I understand that none of them care what anything means, they just don’t like being depicted at all, by anyone else.

That all being said, I do believe the nhl would change the name if they could, but it comes down to ownership needing to do it themselves.

Guy: "Canada Air Force"
Interviewer: "What city?"
Guy: "What's the capital of Canada?"
Friend: "I dunno"
Guy: "Ontario".

Thank you for the laughs.
