Penticton and Chilliwack to the WHL

It would also mean only going to the US every second year, which isn't a treat. It adds travel, maybe has a couple of longer trips, but it can be managed. You are maximizing the impact in your assessment.
Regina is six hours further away than Portland. Brandon is nearly nine hours further.

I wonder if the Dub (and the O and Q) are concerned about border crossing and foreseeable economic issues. Perhaps the NHL involvement might include bringing the US Division into some arrangement with the USHL?

Reasonable concern. I wondered the same. People misjudge the USHL because some high end players come out of it - not near the depth of CHL teams.

I'm sure there are many considering the political aspect (or at least they should be if they already aren't) but the pressing hockey issue with the USHL is that the teams are too far away for the Dub and they couldn't just join the CHL wholesale because the USHL has players ineligible for the CHL, either due to CHL teams holding player's rights and/or not being from the CHL league's territory.

The closest USHL team to the WHL's U.S Division is the Tri-City Storm, which is nearly a 20 hour drive from Spokane.

I realize that Wenatchee used to be in the NAHL, and flew to their road games since they were the only team out West, but I assure you the WHL is not considering anything like that. This is the USHL's problem to solve. They need to find a way to recruit talent now that they won't be getting top-end players.

Penticton expansion draft details were released yesterday.
  • Draft will take place on May 7th and team's protected lists will be submitted on May 6th
  • Pentiction can draft 22 players, one from each team
  • Teams have two options for protected lists
    • 16 players ages 17 to 20 years old appearing on their 50-player, injured, suspended, graduate, special import, and 20-year-old lists, plus an additional six players appearing on their college list
    • 14 players ages 17 to 19 years old and three 20-year-old players (with the same roster caveats as above)
  • 09s are exempt
  • The two skaters on the WHL's Pro Hockey List of underage players in the NHL this season, Connor Bedard and Zach Benson, are also exempt
  • Pentiction will be able to dress four 20's this upcoming season
Kind of interesting that the draft will be happening during the finals, so there is a chance there are going to be two players actively playing for their technically former team in the finals.

MH and Spokane can likely make a deal to either keep those picks sealed until over, or even better they could make a trade so that there isn't a pick. Or, could the league just say that those picks will have to wait?

Expansion draft results. That trade for Birnie and Stevenson is a CRAZY return for Swift. Two potential first rounders for two 20-year-olds. Insane.

I don't know it if will happen but I'd like the see teams speak on the reasonings for the trades because the only one I have a strong assumption about is Kelowna wanting to keep as many players around for later trades. Did Penticton approach some teams? Did the some teams approach Penticton?

Along those lines, is it a coincidence that they still ended up with 22 players even with pick trades or did they have to make up the difference with their other trades?

As for the Hitmen, I don't like publicly talking bad about these kids about strictly level of play so all I'll say about Valliant is that he's a player that could have ended up in Pentiction and I wish him the best... but I'm kind of surprised about a younger defenceman in LaPlante being traded.

That's a tidy return for SC getting at least one and potentially two 1sts from Penticton.
Also sets the price for a PPG forward on the market as well for later tonight potentially.

Rockets make their first move to get Carson Wetsch from Calgary. Heard they had a deal in place for Clarke Caswell, but now that he's going to school they had to change their sights.
