Why on earth would we need to retain Eller and his 2.45 million sweetheart contract?
He's one of the best 3Cs available out there, maybe the best?

How the f*** are people still giving Dubas the benefit of the doubt?
Dude has yet to make a single good move
I think you may be thinking of a different Lars Eller or your perception of players has been warped because the Pens are shitty across the board. Eller is a decent depth C, nothing more. He's like Matt Cullen in 2017, except maybe a little worse.

We got a 3rd from a middling team and a 5th.

Literally in the salary cap thread people debated if he could get a 2nd or not.

Sure we got a 3rd but that 3rd is from the Capitals and I do not think they are a team where that the 3 will be very low.

Guaranteed trading Eller while he is healthy as well.

Lastly gives us cap space to accrue so at the deadline we will be able to possibly take on something bigger.

Remember 5 minutes ago when we were excited to watch McGroarty-Eller-Puljujarvi after they crushed preseason and then they sent down McGroarty immediately, benched Puljujarvi for no reason and then traded Eller? Absolutely stupendous.
Hahaha post of the year. What's funny is we all knew that line was too good that Sullivan would have never allowed it.

Do you think trading an asset for a futures asset 2 years down the road with no premium is ambitious? Why?
Because this is how you get your prospects to line up with a potential contender window.
2025 picks will probably be ready to be difference makers when they're 22, in 2029. We know full well how bad it's gonna be in 2029.
We need them to be 22 years old in like 2031, or later.
This is ambitious?

Lets have a real wild time and microwave a glass of milk and catch a Bob Ross marathon.
It's better than the prospect being ready to go in 2029 when the team's at rock bottom, and we just waste his ELC for no reason.
We need them to be ready when the team is. Timing is important, much like how we used the Guentzel and Murray ELCs to win Cups.

No, he's more like 2023 Henrique who went for a 1st at the TDL.

Eller has been lights out as a 3C for the Pens over the last year and some change. He's worth a 2nd easily at the deadline.

I think Dubas was worried that his value would only go lower as this ship keeps sinking. Ellers been quiet lately. I’m kind of annoyed more for Crosby and Malkin’s sake. They’re officially on a fully tanking team now if it wasn’t already apparent.
Yea, you know Kyle Dubas. Always known for striking early before something goes bad. What's that? Oh, just ignore the 3,000 lb Mike Sullivan in the corner.

1. That was a brutal trade and Ken Holland isn't in the NHL anymore.
2. Henrique had 40 points in 60 games. Eller is a 30 points in 82 games guy.

So why did Dubas specifically target drafted prospects in the Jake deal so they would be ready faster and trade Yager for a guy whose main positive was that he was pro ready now?

I mean don't get me wrong... Eller is getting overrated. By the team itself, at that. Look how he's been used the last couple of years.

But they pulled this trigger too soon IMO. And besides I don't see much reason to be anything other than utterly ambivalent about a 3rd round pick in 2027. Especially when you consider they are just going to almost certainly backfill this loss with more garbage.

Then again I suppose that's the point, now. Boy... one can see why you need an expensive GM to pull off THESE kinds of moves.

I agree he should have targeted later picks. Said that about our drafting before he was even hired.
He's course correcting, based on having more evidence now of where they're at for the foreseeable future. He's done a lot of that since coming here.
When he first arrived he was talking about winning the division. Now he's shaken off any remaining delusions.
It's fine getting immediate picks if you end up flipping them later again. But that's sort of a dice roll approach, where you can come out better or worse for it.
That's why I prefer the higher percentage route.

lol I forgot they even did that.

To be fair I bet they do too.

You see that? That's a 1st round pick. I'd hold onto that one if I were you.
