Let's say this pick potentially is ready to contribute at 22 y/o. It's a much bigger chance the Pens are ready to make the playoffs again by 2031 than 2029.

By downgrading the pick. IE a 3rd the next year typically gets you a 4th in the current draft.

Eller should have been in pretty high demand this deadline based on his play and what comparable players have gone for the last few deadlines. Just seems like a panic move and a low sell. I'd also be willing to wager we're going to be bringing in another player in the next few days with this cap space. They will likely be much worse than Eller.
