Can someone tell me how a defensive d-man and a 2nd pairing rookie are going to solve the 4% shooting percentage the Pens have during this 6 game losing streak?

they’re not directly going to but they will help get more O zone possession by getting the puck quickly up the ice which will likely lead to more scoring chances, which help, even if the 4% stays the same...but yeah, that 4% needs to be a lot lot better...having Simon and ZAR out of the lineup should presumably help that % go up...lol

So no one knows how they will actually help, just that they will, just because. During the 6 game losing streak the Pens have out shot all 6 opponents combined 198-154, only being outshot by Toronto by 6 shots and San Jose by 2. They outshot Buffalo 43-26, Wash 35-23, LA 36-22 and Anaheim 30-21.
So sure, break outs and offensive zone pressure, that is where this team is lacking. Getting 2 defensemen back is going to magically solve this.

I mean, when you ignore everyone else’s argument and just quote selective stats, it really looks like Luther Khelandros is on to something more than just top 10 smooth R’n’B jams.

Marino is very good at skating the puck to pressure, makes good outlet passes, reads the play well in knowing when to join the rush and when not to. He's reliable defensively as it pertains to puck management, gap and overall structure and is arguably our best defensemen when it comes to fueling the transition game in general with his vision and poise. It doesn't solve all of our problems, but it does help in an area we are completely deficient in currently.
