Even IF Rust wasn't loved by all, Dubas has not shown to be capable of orchestrating a significant trade (which, come on, Rust is at least a middle sized fish).
Someone would have to come knock on our door to get Rust a la Karlsson. And Dubes will get burned on it in some way, too.

I don't think you need to retain 50% on Rust to get a 2nd. Straight up, that's probably fair. If someone needs to send cap back, it might change things. The good news is the Minnesota is running pretty lean this season because the buyouts are tagging on $14mil. Next year, it drops to $1mil so they are are about to have some spending money. Fitting in Rust wouldn't be an issue especially if they trade Rossi who will need a new deal.
If there is any retention, it means the deal would have to be done in the off-season when out retention slots open back up. That's also when Rust loses his trade protection as well. I imagine Guerin will want a 1st rounder level value for Rossi so honestly, it wouldn't shock me to see something like:
Rossi+2rd 2025 for Rust+1st 2025 Top 10 protected*+Poulin+Kasper Bjorkqvist.
Rust will bring back a 1st this off season. He is just to attractive as a RW RS who can score with a decent contract/salary. Pens get back picks to package for a center or two in the draft next 2 years. Dubas needs younger RW's here in the draft and centers in the next couple of drafts. Have to hope someone emerges from so many picks next couple of years.

You don't go into next season with any of Petts, Rust, EK, DOC, or Puljujarvi on the roster imo. Petts by the TDL, Rust and EK in the off-season, DOC because he's just kinda shit, and Puljujarvi because he's simply not an option to this coach. Well, I mean, ideally you go into next season without Sullivan being the coach as well, but I dunno man. This team's as stupid as they are cowardly.

Probably, but man would is it an obvious move. Player with a good league rep that the coach loves that is clearly on the downswing and will only crash his value every year.
It's frustrating that Dubas could be ruthless with Guentzel but you just know he won't be with a worse player in Rust because the coach is in love with him. Boy would I love to be proven wrong.
I think they are afraid to piss Sid off too. They already moved Jake. They aren't gonna move his other pal.

We're not trading anymore 1sts. Not for a while anyhow. Also, if it's top 10 protected that means we'd likely have to give it up for the '26 draft, bad idea. That could be a very dangerous move.

You're seeing a clear downswing with Rust? Cuz I'm seeing like a 0.5 G/PG and 0.95 P/PG player since being stripped of Guentzel as his winger, without PP1 for a fair chunk of the last 2 years.
I would say Rust and Jake's mindsets are very different concerning the future. Jake was thinking about cashing in and playing for a contender.
Rust wants to be a Penguins lifer. He said he wants to be here until they start winning again. He wants his kid to grow up in Pittsburgh.
That combined with a very different contract from Jake's and yeah, I could definitely see a timeline where he stays.
Plus he's a better leader than Jake for the next wave.

I'm mostly inclined to believe you, however, the goal of the 1st is to get a young prospect that will be a roster player. Rossi is that. We desperately need a center. Unless we pick top 5, Rossi is what you hope to get out of the player you draft with the first this year (again, top 5 withstanding - because I'm still gushing over Misa).
I deleted the conditions before I posted but I came up with a few: you get a 1st for Pettersson+. 1st is conditional based on draft position. If it's top 10, they get the later 1st from Pettersson and then tack on a 3rd or something. No way in hell I do ANYTHING with that 2026 1st. Or the 27 1st for that matter. I think this may be the last year where you can make this type of balanced decision.

That NMC expires this summer though. Rust knows that, so if they decided they wanna trade him, he might go along with it at the deadline.
Blocking it would only buy him a few months.
But I'm not convinced they will pursue this.
Rakell? Sure.
Bunting? Good chance.
Petts? Absolutely.
Rust? Idk. Dubas sort of takes a romantic approach with leaders for the next crop.
