He's DOC but at $3million for 3 years, starting next year.

It's a terrible add.

That kind of money is exactly what O’Connor would be making if he hit UFA last year instead of this year.

If O’Connor wouldn’t have struggled as badly as he has so far this year, I would have just paid him that to keep him.

If we didn't have Hayes, Nieto, Bunting, Acciari, all signed for next year, then fine, but I still don't get the attention he is getting as a target.

Having shitty players they should get rid of isn’t a justification to saying no to a solid to good young player they can get for cheap.

Nieto is also not under contract for next year.

Ahh good, Nieto is gone. I mean I don't hate the idea of Hoglander, I'm not sold on him at all. If he was at all solid or good, than why is Vancouver so desperate to get rid of him? He's another player who could be ok in the bottom 6, maybe.

"Just details" eh Mike? How about teaching some details to the team about not hemorrhaging high quality chances. This is like 1984 tanking for Mario, someone plays good they get scratched or demoted.

As for Hoglander.. I think in theory he (plus a small add) is an okay return for an expiring UFA, but I dont think this staff would use him properly..shocker. I would put him with Malkin and Tomasino or Pulju. You know, balance out his skill with some size. I dont want him, but if they dump Beau id slot him there.

I’m legitimately curious who Hoglander would be blocking that is an upgrade on him. Do people not realize that what Hoglander has become is already likely as good or better than what someone like Poulin or Ponomarev will become? With Beauvillier and O’Connor both as UFAs, Hoglander would most likely be taking one of their spots.

If Hoglander was 29 like Bunting, I’d totally understand the complaints. But saying no to a cost controlled, 24 year old DOC clone (let’s call him that for simplicity) because “he’ll be blocking WBS players” makes zero sense. He’s a young player himself and is better than those WBS players. They need more players like DOC in their bottom-6, and Hoglander fits exactly that. He’s the kind of bottom-6 guy they should be targeting while they’re cleaning out the rest of the gunk with Hayes, Acciari and such.

I probably would t re-sign O’Connor if they trade for Hoglander, but Hoglander, Lizotte and O’Connor would be a nice start to a rebuilt bottom-6 that both fits how Sullivan wants to deploy it and also can provide some nice secondary scoring and speed. If he’d ever give Puljujarvi a chance, he’d fit in that group as well. Those guys plus guys like Ponomarev and Poulin coming up is how they should build their bottom-6. Add McGroarty and Tomisano in a top-6 role (probably both with Malkin) and that's the kind of "youth movement" this team should have. My goal lineup forward group with that in mind would be something like:

Rakell-Crosby-Rust
McGroarty-Malkin-Tomasino
Hoglander-Glass-O'Connor
Lizotte-Ponomarev-Puljujarvi
Poulin

I don't think he would be blocking anyone, as when some of the WBS players start to come up they'll be just as good.

I don't understand the draw, he will be ok at best, and that's good enough for a rebuild. But if he's traded for Petersson I'd rather a combo of picks and prospects instead of a player like Hoglander and a lower pick.

I like the lineup, again, I don't hate Hoglander, just don't think he does anything different from what we already have. I like him a lot more than Tomasino... This bottom 6 is theoretically better than this year, and this year is a lot better than last year. So positive progress is a good thing.

I don't want Hoglander if he dampens MP's value. Focus should be futures under 20.
If he's attainable by other means, a 3rd line of Hog- Koivunen- Puljujarvi could be fun next year if Dubas trims the fat.
