I don't think Jake being banged up is what f***ed his value. Talks went south in the summer between his camp and the Pens, and he decided to go hard line on testing FA, and everyone knew it. So he was a pure rental.

Petts probably fetches a 1st last season at the TDL, albeit a late 1st from a contender, but he's been dogshit this year and now he's banged up to boot. Ah well. Shouldn't have waited. Lesson learned, I'm sure. /s

I think it was more Dubas not willing to let other teams talk to him or his agent to get an idea of extension demands. So you're right, teams looked at him as a pure rental.

The best case scenario was always Vancouver with paying like Hoglander, Mynio/Pettersson and a 2nd for MP. Teams aren't paying 1st rounders for defensemen like MP.
That package looks right to me and that's likely with MP retained and possibly a very small add from us.

I'm just not real sure where the Canucks are in the pecking order of legit contenders.

MP with 40% retention and a 5th for HOG, 2hd and Mynio/Petts would seem to make a lot of sense.

Indeed and honestly, depending on what the market is, I would probably be happy with 2 of the 3:

Hogs+Petts/Mynio
Hogs+2nd
Petts/Mynio+2nd

Any of those would likely be fine as they are consistent with that 2 2nds or 2nd+3rd value which is what Pettersson roughly is.

Nah Hoglander's value is purely a throw-in. The value needs to be Pettersson/Mynio and a 2nd for Pettersson for me to even consider it.

I have him around a 3rd or so. I think if they were wanting to dump him for anything less, they would have by now.

Pettersson+2nd for Pettersson (with something retained) is the simplest trade that makes the most overall sense to me.

Rust for Rossi is an instant yes for me.
Why would MIN do that?

I think they'd want HOG included to offset the cap. Also, HOG seems to not have a fan in Tocchet.

MP with retention for the three we mentioned makes the most sense.

Maybe. One thing that was pointed out was the relationship between Tocchet and Sullivan. They are similar coaches and have similar tendencies. Me thinks that if Tocchet doesn't like Hoglander, Sullivan probably won't either. I 100% do NOT trust Sullivan to give Hoglander an open and honest (and unbiased) chance here. So maybe you and Emp are right. They might have to add him for cheap to get us to take him. Though I think there are several teams in the league that would flat out.

Valid point but I do think the cap is a big consideration. If they would do MP with retention for Petts/Mynio and a 2hd I'd 100% do it. I'm not sure however if the cap would prohibit it despite retention.

I wanna go BIG! Well, relatively speaking.

Vancouver receives: MP 40% retention, DOC and a '25 4th
Pittsburgh receives: Hoglander, Petts, '25 2hd, '27 3rd
or HOG, Mynio, '25 2hd, '26 2hd

I think Petts has a slightly higher value than Mynio but that would balance it out.

How would one go about contacting Mike Sullivan?

Mikael Granlund > Sidney Crosby right now.

I'd like to ask him about how and why he used Granlund the way he did.
I don't see what the problem is. Shouldn't you use your playmaking center who gets like 40% of his production on the power play as your defensive shutdown 3C?

Don't get me wrong, I've been "fire Sullivan" for three years now but

Granlund isn't 100 percent on Sullivan, that trade was a bad fit for what the team.
He also was going through some shit off the ice.

Granlund 100 percent needs to be a playmaking center in the top six with scoring wingers. He was absolutely the last player the pens needed that year.

He is a pure puck distributor who needs good wingers on either side of him. He wasnt going to bump sid obviously and at that time suggesting Geno play wing couldn't be suggested because it would hurt his feelings.

So, just like with graves now Sullivan had to to square peg/round hole granlund into a defensive third line center role with whatever bargin bin barely 3rd liners he was given . What was it mcginn, carter, and heinen who had less than 30 goals combined between them in a full season?

Granlund is doing better now because he's not going though a life crisis, is getting top line minutes and is, probably, the least talented player in San joses top six, but he is exactly what they need right now

Yeah, we need to come up with a different player for our pie in the sky proposals

NMC not getting waived, and very little chance FO moves him even after it drops off
I wonder if he'd waive for Ottawa. Everything I've seen indicates his wife is from the area, went to university in Ottawa and I believe she works there.

Granlund is like when Dick Tarnstrom was scoring lots of points for the Pens. Just a decent player on a terrible team getting tons of ice time so of course he's going to produce a lot.
But it would be fun to see our staff say that as an answer, while getting red in the face

They'll probably say we don't like to comment on other teams' players

Only 50 seconds more TOI/G than Sid with more points in fewer games.

In a vacuum, I don't give a shit about Granlund. I wouldn't have re-signed him.

I'm mad that Mike Sullivan doesn't understand lineups, player strengths, player chemistry, potential, matchups, special teams, or the game in general.

Anyone watching Granlund can tell it's not because he's "on a bad team". Dude is a real difference maker out there for the Sharks at all situations.

It's pretty obvious we used him like Nick Bonino because we need a Nick Bonino and a Matt Cullen.

He understands it from a 4th liners point of view. This guy coaches like it’s his personal directive to keep older, fringe guys in the league earning a NHL paycheck.
