I remember thinking Fowler was the next Scott Niedermayer because of his skating. I get some right and some wrong. And some really wrong.

That Fowler trade makes me think that a Karlsson trade will just end up Karlsson at $5 million for a 2nd and a shit prospect. Great job by trading for him Dubas.

I don't understand how this a comparable at all.

Fowler is on pace for 20 pts.
Karlsson is on pace for 50 pts.

Both are on bad teams and get about the same icetime.

Also people talked about how Karlsson was last year and he still put up 8 more points than Fowlers career high.

I will never criticize Dubas (or any GM) for swinging for the fences in an attempt to bring in an impact player if the plan is to still try and contend during Crosby/Malkin's career.

Where Dubas failed was keeping Sullivan and not adding *more* impact players, not his acquisition of Karlsson.

And EK is a right shot which is the more valuable side. He's not bringing back a top 5 pick, but a first rounder and an ok prospect is definitely achievable.

So. Chances we put a claim for Wahlstrom? Wasn't we rumoured to be interested in him this off-season?

He's youngish with some upside based on his draft position which Dubas loves and a New England guy that played for Boston College which makes Mike Sullivan smile like a butcher's dog. I'd be surprised if they don't.

Produces at a career pace of 13-13-26 if he played 82 games per season. Not bad for 11:41 atoi. But not 1 second of pk in his career. So I'm going to say 0%.

Boston claimed him…as we’d be higher up on the claims list given our worse record, I guess we didn’t put in a claim…not sure why not

Because they already have similar players to Wahlstrom, including Poulin.

They took a shot on Tomasino because he has the potential to be a top six guy. Wahlstrom does not.

Tbh, I always thought Karlsson was a high risk kill-or-cure addition that a side with more options wouldn't have done - but the Penguins' lack of trade capital and tight cap situation meant that was about the only real option.

edit: Also just lazy stat counting suggests a reason why this team didn't want Wahlstrom. Might be right, might be wrong, but he's done a lot less than Tomasino as a pro.

It's kinda wild that the Rangers are only one point ahead of the Pens (even with them having a two games in hand advantage).

I feel like he did his best work in Ottawa when they were running a 1-3-1. Four guys playing defense and he just could kind of run around.
