6-1-1 against teams on pace for under 80 points

1-9-2 against teams on pace for over 80 points

We can only beat bad teams. This is the mediocre hell we were all afraid of. We won’t really start rebuilding until three years from now. Meaning a competitive team is decades away.

Curious for how people would feel about this deadline deal: Pettersson (at 50%) and Beauvillier to Vancouver for Hoglander, Mynio and a 2025 2nd.

Mynio was a 2023 3rd rounder that's over a PPG in the WHL as a defenseman right now. Great skating OFD with not terrible size (6'1" and 175 lbs). He's not as appealing of a prospect as Elias Pettersson but he doesn't seem like a bad prospect either.

This seems like a Dubas deal of trying to "stay competitive" with adding NHL pieces with Hoglander at the expense of a bit of a middling (not terrible but middling) futures return for Pettersson. The difference is that Hoglander is only 23 rather than Bunting being 29, but it's still a similar concept.

I think that is the kind of deal Dubas would like, but I would prefer someone younger than Hoglander or an extra pick instead.

I get that he wants to rebuild around Sid fast. I think that's a pipe dream and they need to bottom out for a couple years.

Overall, fair value and I see the logic.

I have no feelings about deadline deals because I know Dubas will f*** them all up just like he's f***ed basically every simple transaction he's had to make since becoming our POHO.

Yeah plus I think Vancouver could definitely be interested in Beauvillier as cheap depth to replace him. They had him for the second half of 2022-2023 and early into 2023-2024 and he put up 28 points in 55 games with them, so I could definitely see them being interested in him as a Hoglander replacement with how cheap his AAV is.

You'd want Hoglander to take the next step while playing with Crosby for that deal to be really worth it, but I don't really think that's too much of a stretch considering he had 24 goals last year in mostly bottom-6 minutes. He's signed to a 3x3 extension for after this year, so you could get some nice value for him down the line if he steps up to a consistent 20-20 or 25-25 player.

It fits with the Guentzel deal of that "staying competitive while building for the future" while also being a fairly meh return, so I think it makes sense. It's not a terrible return for Pettersson overall, it's just kinda underwhelming but also makes logical sense.

Dunno what to think about Hoglander tbh. He's shown promise, but he's also looked like Kapanen-esque dogshit too.

-edit- I also wish they'd abandon this stupid as f***, impossible "stay competitive while rebuilding" bullshit. They're chasing a mirage. :laugh:

I mean, much like Guentzel's deal, I want a 1st.

People say a "late 1st" doesn't mean much, but for example if we combine a late 1st and a few of these 2nds we can jump up in the draft and get a better player.

I don't really care what NHL ready players / prospects that are out there. If Sullivan's coach he won't play them.

I think he's probably just a more physical Kapanen, but Kapanen himself also had damn good seasons that teams could sell high on.

Just takes Dubas not being a dumbass and selling high on Hoglander when he'd get the chance.

I like Hoglander in theory and for his potential. I also think he's essentially a boom or bust player. He's a lot like Puljujarvi - if he's playing well and being a scoring threat, he's immensely valuable. If he's not, you start to question his place in the lineup even if he's got nice possession stats.

Nah, the modern Penguins way is to win just enough games to leave you confused as to who they are and what direction they should be headed.
 
Make the deal for the bigger LD in Peterson from the Canucks. Petts will be in demand at the TDL and GMJR will overpay for a player he wants. This is a new concept for the Pens. Building a roster without a superstar or two to work with. Now a move to give Sid a cup run can add a nice package as well. Sullivan will be gone and new staff to develop the young talent is the next move after this season. Dubas added RD last year and needs to add a very good center and RW in the draft. If they can get Peterson as LD, with Pickering and one of the younger LD guys emerging, the D can be ready for prime time in a couple years.

Considering Petts is the only one on the team that is willing to fight and, if the Pens radio team is correct, he’s taken the most hits out of any NHL player over the last 3 years…Dubas should act before the deadline if he gets a deal structured how he wants.

Petts has been durable for the physicality he plays with despite being a string bean. It’s only a matter of time before he gets hurt. Imagine if he would get hurt so we can’t trade him then he walks.

My hope is JR decides Petts is his guy and does the classic JR pay up early to get his man trade.

Gryz should have been scratched over Graves…DK agrees in his morning podcast…agree that why Graves was scratched and not Gryz is a mystery lol…

Hopefully if Letang is well, they pair Pickering with him and have the kid play in the top four…try
