Yup! Who wants to talk shit about DOC or doubt me now?

That's what happens when you work out with Ben Prentiss, and why I said I wanted Poulin and Legare and POJ and Blueger and every one else who could use another upgrade in strength & conditioning work out with this guy.

Ben “Pren-TSSS” amirite? :sarcasm:

The Penguins will host the first game at 1 p.m., and the second game will be played at Nationwide Arena in Columbus at 7. Sullivan is planning on being present at both games. The head coach said he’ll be “jumping in a van” with Ron Hextall and Brian Burke immediately after the first game and will then make the 2 1/2-hour drive on Interstate 70 to Columbus, which should allow him the opportunity to coach both games.

lol.
I feel like they never played two games in one day before. Or did I just not notice it happening? I like to think I paid at least a passing attention to preseason. Especially back in the day.

I legit think Carter being on LTIR is the best case scenario for this team. You give Carter less of a workload on the year, get to see what Poehling can do in a 3C role and become cap compliant with a 23 man roster.

This is a huge logical jump on my end, but I wonder if Carter being out and the Penguins being able to run with a 23 man roster could influence their decision with POJ vs Smith. If you send Smith down to WBS, I don't believe you need to waive anyone beyond Caggiula to become roster compliant. I have a feeling that Hextall probably doesn't want to waive Friedman, so they'll probably carry 8 defensemen if they can make a 23 man roster work with the cap.

I don't wish actual injury on the guy.

I just want to pens to play some of that sweet cap circumvention LTIR music that every other team plays

Looking at the clip of him getting hit high by Guentzel you'd be lucky if he was out a week or two. I'm seeing it as him being held out as a precautionary thing. The contact wasn't as server to think LTIR 10 games/24 days worthy.

Highly doubt Carter's out long term. It was just an arm to the face. It wasn't very strong either (Guentzel  ). It was more about him being blindsided.
Assuming it's a concussion. I mean, what else?

Still 18 days til the opener. Would be very surprised if it goes beyond that.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kap had a breakout season.. an off-season with plenty of motivation to improve combined with a coach willing to admit he made some mistakes in how he handled the player, and a top 6 wing spot possibly up for grabs, or at least only written in pencil.

To his credit he’s previously silenced doubts about him. Was called a perimeter player in his draft and post-draft year so he started going to the net more and scoring uglier goals. In Toronto he wasn’t going to get a call-up unless he could play bottom 6 so he learned to PK, cycle better and and play more defensively-minded.

This post would have been absolutely appropriate last year at this time though too, and in fact, everyone was optimistically saying it. He's just not a bright hockey player, and he has been a perimeter player here.

I think the best way to get some value out of the guy is to have him PK regularly. At this point, I'm afraid he is what he is. Forwards should not be trying to figure things out at this age, he should be at his peak production.

can you be a good pk if you're not bright? it seems to me thats where you would need to have high intelligence.
edit; i dont think he lacks intelligence, he is just weak mentally and when/if he loses confidence, he has trouble recovering.

I tend to think PK'ing as a forward is about the easiest job you can have. I'd have him on the 2nd PK duo so he can take advantage of tired legs, not much to think about.

Notes from a pro scout here on yesterday for the fringe guys:

-Big Z had nice moments in his game. He turns over pucks with higher regularity due to his size which is great. I still want him as the 12/13F. Do not care to risk losing him.

-DOC...I want to like him I really do because he's noticeable with his speed and size. But I lose hope in him with his Ozone instincts. At the NHL level he just doesn't seem to have it. I hope I'm wrong and he can figure it out. Either way he's starting in the A.

-Archibald is no bueno. Waive him down to the A or hopefully someone picks him up.

-Frasca I had no real read on him prior to the game but he looks the part of a pro...I'll be interested in his call up if/when that happens.

-Caggs looks ok. He's definitely better than Archibald so it'll be interesting to see but I feel Sully might roster him.

-Poehling I didn't get much of anything in 1 game except he's likely a lock for the 4th line.

-Poulin looks better this year and I'm happy to see it. Honestly would be sweet to see him played in a top 6 C role for a few games when Sid or Geno have injuries. Don't let me down Mr. Power Forward.

Those are pretty fair assessments and pretty close to what I had. Re: DOC - that's why I want him in the AHL at 1C - to help evolve those offensive zone instincts. He shows flashes here and there and I think with offensive-minded wings, he can get there. You stick him with Poehling and McGinn though, he won't. That is why I want the coaching staff to push the offense on him.

This is the same exact thing I thought about O'Connor yesterday. He visibly looks good because he's very athletic and very noticeable with his speed and size combination. However, it seems like just not a lot happens with the amount of stuff he's doing. I think it's a low hockey IQ problem more than anything, he just can't figure out where to be on the ice.

It's the anti Dominik Simon. Simon always knew where to be and didn't have any obviously great traits, so people came out from watching him super underwhelmed. O'Connor doesn't know where to be but he has the athleticism and size to get place to place and is always engaged in the play, so people think he looks good.
