Value of: Penguins trading up to #3 with Chicago

I think Dubas would be making a mistake if he traded all of that to move up to #3 to get Martone when Frondell is still sitting there. They need centers in their organization. I would understand if Martone was sitting at 7, 8, or 9 and wanted to move up but thats a lot for a winger. Thats either a very incorrect source or a smokescreen

This aligns with what Dubas has said about Martone in the past, so it seems like the Penguins love Martone and would need to move up to #3 to make sure they get him. What would be the cost here?

I have a feeling the cost here will be the Penguins 2026 1st, it's just a question of what kind of protections/clauses will be on that pick.

There’s absolutely nothing in the Pens pipeline that’s worth moving down for.

They might be in the worst shape of any NHL team.

For McGoarty? I'm sure Pens would say no, but that's the only under 25 top 6 potential piece that I am aware of that the Pens have. Thats the only thing Chicago would be after

Penguins have good players that would make Chicago better, but we aren’t really at that point yet.

Only way I could see this would be if Kyle Dubas pulls a Kyle-From-Chicago and offers a pick swap for 2026 first rounder, like we offered to CBJ last year. That would pull Pittsburgh out of the McKenna sweepstakes but gets them third overall in this draft. Kind of a tough call.

This is the only scenario I would consider.

Pens would be nuts to do that.

You’d have to overpay. There is no gurantee the Penguins are a bottom 5 team next season. They were expected to be that this year and they weren’t. If you want 3rd oa, you have to pay 11th oa + 2026 1st or no deal

This is ridiculous. Not only is the Pens pipeline not near the worst in the league… find me a better team that has as bleak of an outlook in say the next handful of years.

Their 1st rounders will carry a large amount of weight in trade discussions because of their outlook.

This wouldn’t be a prospect deal to begin with.

And as a Pens fan, there’s no way they should be going up that high. They need all of the picks they can get. Not to throw more valuable ones away.

I think the Penguins would have to offer their 2026 1st and Chicago would have to think that the guys at the top of the 2026 draft are far better than Frondell and Martone.

The Penguins just can't give up McKenna for Martone, but if you could like top-2 protect that pick, I would do that pick for Martone. It would basically be Chicago trading Martone for a pick that is likely someone like Verhoeff or Roobroeck, which I think is an upgrade for Chicago IMO.

At the same point, the Penguins could just take Roobroeck in 2026 and I think he's a very similar prospect to Martone, so I'm not entirely sure why they would move their 2026 1st just to get Martone. They'd have to think Martone is a super special prospect to do that I think.
The 2026 draft is way deeper and has impact Dmen in more volume at the top of the draft, don't see the Pens moving off that pick at all.

The Pens have so many holes that one top prospects doesn't change a bit.
I'm for adding more 1st round picks, by trading Rust and/or Rakell, then using them for trading up.
Of course trading 2026 1st is out of any logic for the Pens.

From the Hawks' perspective, I'd do it for 11, their 1st next year, and one of Rust or Rackell. I highly doubt Pittsburgh would give up a shot at McKenna for 3OA this year but that's probably what it would take.
what about something like 3 for 11 and 2026 1st (pick swap option with Blackhawks 2026 1st), Rust

I think any package involving the Pens' 2026 1st would be a nonstarter from Pittsburgh. A 3 way with a 3rd team giving up a 1st that ends up in Chicago might be more viable but I'm not sure who that team would have to be.

To Team X: Rakell
To Pens: Team X's 2026 1st

To Hawks: Pens 2025 1st, potentially another 2025 Pens pick, Team X's 2026 1st?
To Pens: Hawks' 2025 1st

Something along those lines? Like I said, idk if a suitable team would do Rakell for a 1st.

Pass from the pens. Next year's draft is better. I want as many 26 1rst as possible.

I don't see a good trading fit here.

Blackhawks have a lot of young prospects in the system right now and have a ton of high draft picks coming up. I think they're in the quality over quantity phase of their rebuild at this point.

-two 1sts + two 2nds in 2025
-two 1sts + three 2nds in 2026

This is in addition to the picks they've already made recently:

-three 1sts in 2024
-two 1sts + three 2nds in 2023
-three 1sts + two 2nds in 2022

Any trade would need to include someone better than Frondell/Martone/Hagens, not just more quantity.

“If they were to get the rangers 12th pick….”

Did he speak this into existence? lol

The pens are not trading the 2026 1st. Makes absolutely no sense for them

**fart noise**

11+12 for 3 is fair, maybe an overpayment this year
Not really this year or in the situation the Hawks are in. Most scouts feel there is a substantial drop at 9 or 10 (depending on what you think of McQueen's medicals. #3 give you pick of the litter after Schaefer/Misa of 6 or 7 guys that are projected as potential top of the lineup guys where when you get to 11/12 you are getting the 2nd or 3rd choice of the guys that project more to middle of the lineup ceilings. Hawks don't need quantity, they need top of the lineup talent as they have a prospect pool full of recent high draft picks (and more coming) in the quantity middle of a lineup ceilings.

I have some concerns that because of the celebration this year and the impressively bad TV situation last season, that there may be pressure to make a big move.
