Confirmed with Link: Penguins sign Filip Hallander to an ELC

Watching that Hallander highlight video, I absolutely see the Hornqvist comparisons but he seems like a Hornqvist/Kapanen hybrid. Dude skates really well and is always cleaning up garbage in the dirty areas, but he's also showing some skill and similar offensive playstyles to Kapanen.

He had quite a few plays there where he skates in and then loops around looking for trailers coming into the zone. I feel like Kapanen did that a ton as well. Obviously you want to see how he does in the NHL rather than the SHL, but I'm pretty immediately interested in playing him on L3 with what I'm seeing.

Penguins officially confirmed it. Also I saw @Jesse you're doing a Hallander mix tape, really excited to see that. I saw this one on twitter:

Jesse tweeted out about an hour ago that he's throwing together a mix tape similar to his top prospects videos.

Thanks for that video. I think that trip back to the SHL did him good. He looked pretty quick and had skills that definitely look like they'd translate to the NHL.

@Jesse what do you think about Hallander´s defensive game? Is he a reliable two way player and do you think a 3rd line of Hallander - Novak - Tomassino could work, given a better deployment as a defensive line?

Glad to see him back, he looks great in the video. A lot of goals from the dirty areas, though those are a lot less dirty than they will be in the NHL. A step in the right direction though.

Actually it was 3 games averaging 8:36 toi per game.
If Nieto deserves 54 @ 11:59 per game, then yes Hallander deserved more than he got. His "audition" wasn't enough to learn anything of his capabilities.
Typical Mike Sullivan methodology of “look, see, I tried youth, now give me more Harkins, White, Nieto, and Acciari so I can ‘win’ nothing meaningful for more years!”

Assuming either Dewar or Hallander can play RW, this is probably what I'd try to do as well.

Leave the 3rd line LW spot open for a nice UFA addition, ideally one that can give them insurance if McGroarty or Koivunen struggle in the top-6.
Hate to break it but I think this guarantees no forward additions unless Rust or Rakell move out. Too many scrubs on one ways to send out. I'm fine with that. Hallander can play 3LW and if he falters, Hayes is passable on a non contender.

Leaning into the Anti-Sully "Give the kids a long leash" trend here, I want all of Hallander, Ponomarev and Broz competing for spots in the lineup. Rotate them through the bottom 6 and spread out the minutes 5v5.

Koivunen Crosby Rust
McGroarty Malkin Rakell
Hallander Novak Tomasino
Dewar Lizotte Broz
Ponomarev (Hayes/Acciari/Heinen, whoever they can't rid themselves of).

More than anything else he seems like a smart player with good situational awareness. Very efficient with how he gets around the ice... always seems to end up in and around the puck. Nothing about his skillset really pops out at you... puck skills, skating, shot, playmaking etc. But smarts and a nose for the net can get you far.

EDIT: His game looks like it's taken strides since his time here. Which is promising.

Yeah, I'm definitely cautiously optimistic about him. A lot of his skillset does look like it's translatable to the NHL.

If you wrote the same about Koivunen, I'd believe you. I'd take two of those.
