Penguins Off-Day Thread

That line has done some damage in the past IIRC. I really hope they stick with it as it's so much better an option than some alternatives now and moving ahead.

If ERod keeps shooting the puck like he has Malkin will keep on looking for him.

And uh... Kap will also be there.

yeah, as I said in the other thread, I’m super skeptical about Kap regaining the touch he had with Geno last season…if it doesn’t happen, I hope Sully changes it quickly (lol, I know, dreaming here) and goes Heinen-Geno-ERod and let Carter and Kap work it out together on what will likely be a fourth line against lesser competition…at his age, I prefer Geno with players who are going to work hard and Kap is inconsistent at that at best

Frankly so long as they don't go back to the dreadful Zucker/Malkin duo I'm more or less satisfied with whatever combinations are left over. Even if I share some of your same concerns re: Kap.

Would McGinn - Blueger - Rodrigues really be the fourth line?

To your point why is the team’s second leading scorer on his off wing or wing at all given his success at center?
Perhaps it wouldn't be the fourth line in minutes, but it would certainly be a heavy tilt towards defensive responsibilities.

As for Rodrigues, he plays all three forward positions. His best possession stats are with Crosby and Guentzel. He has an absurd Goals For % with Kapanen and Malkin. And given Malkin's streakiness in the faceoff circle, Rodrigues could very well be used as a center at times on that line with Geno and Kapanen.

I guess it’s whatever. I just feel Heinen adds more to that line than Rodrigues. Hell, role Heinen - Malkin - Rodrigues and drop Kappy.

The answer is : sanctity of ZAR-Blueger-McGinn and to lesser extent GCR. The Blueger line f***s up the entire line up and force Sully to fit players on lines and positions that will make them underperform or be underutilized..

I'd bet on him going to arbitration. I'm sure that won't be too bad though

I wouldn't unless Hextall lowballs him. Opting for it maybe, but not reaching the hearing. If I'm in Heinen's shoes, I'm thinking I'm one bad year away from being a 1m free agent again, and getting a decent multi-year contract out of the good one - which also goes a long way to ensuring he gets a place in the line up that will ensure no bad year - is a good option compared to gambling on it. I mean, maybe he's wired as a gambler, but I don't think he's got the body of work where he's getting paid as a UFA come what may and that's got to impact his thinking.

Even ZAR wen't to arbitration with us once, I wouldn't be surprised if Heinen does. Though really depends on how the rest of his contract goes imo. Maybe Hextall will give him proper value tho

ZAR made it to outside the arbitration room before settling once, and in it once, and is clearly far more into pushing his case than 99% of other NHLers. He's 2 for 2 on pushing for max money and I wish him luck with it elsewhere (saying this he'll somehow end up back here to everyone's outrage).

But the big difference between ZAR actually going to arbitration and Heinen, if he were to do so, is ZAR's body of work is very consistent and he had a pretty good idea of his role on the team before he elected for it, and what his UFA years will look like. Heinen's different, he doesn't have that going for him.

Ultimately, that's the lineup. Nice because you have 6 top 6 wings than can play up and down the lineup.
That's some serious depth. Simon, Boyle, Lafferty and O'connor too. I expect O'connor to take ZAR's place next season, I think ZAR will ask for too much as a UFA. My guess is one of WSH, VAN or NYI sign him.

I dunno about that. We're on the third straight year of ZAR really boosting Blueger's on-ice results. His production's kinda ugly but I'm okay with paying 1.75m for what he brings to the table and the next time sticking a more offensive player on Blueger's line (in this current role) in place of ZAR works will be pretty close to the first time.

I was going to be a jerk (I mean, I still am regardless) and say that for the price of ZAR we could have 2 players at $875k. But there's literally just one player this season with that cap hit.

Welcome to the I Know How to Construct a Winner family. You get it.

To the other "experts" that post... no hate here. Not every player needs to score to be a success. You look at what a player brings to the team and then you access if the results vs. salary. And if you say you could have two players for the same salary as ZAR as the above poster...that's assuming those two players work out. How many times do 875K players flop? Tons.

Congratulations @Peat you "get it." Welcome to the family. I'm sure it's not a dysfunctional one. I imagine you must be a season ticket holder.

As for you and your totally-serious comment, @Randy Butternubs -- feel the shame. Go back to hockey 101. ZAR is how you build a winner. Why do you think the Penguins have been so successful during his tenure? I think his one goal and 4 total points in 23 games that matter tell the tale, there. Points are irrelevant this day and age and NOT scoring points is actually preferable in most ways... if you know what you're talking about. So that's one way you can tell he's really good.

Some people just get and some people don't. Sad.
