Proposal: Penguins-Hurricanes-Stars 3-way trade

I'm not disagree with you necessarily, but at the same time, I don't think bringing in EK delays either Nikishin or Morrow. There are 4 sign dmen next season. Add those two, it's 6. Most teams what to have that depth up to 8 or so. Injuries happen.

I don't think the Hurricanes should be in the business of skimping at this point. They need to start putting some playoff wins together instead of worrying about the next corner with the crop of prospects.
I agree, but I don't think they want to block Morrow next year. And the bigger question is whether Karlsson is the style of RD they would bring in vs scenario 2 where a more defensive RD is brought in to pair with Slavin while Ghost, Morrow, and (less) Nikishin are the more offensive D.

Hurricanes get Karlsson at $7 million
Penguins get Dallas' 2026 2nd, Carolina's 2025 3rd and Badinka
Stars gets Burns

This deal basically breaks down into Burns and Morrow for Karlsson at $7 million followed by Burns for a 2026 2nd. Dallas was apparently not interested in Karlsson or Jones due to the term left on their deals (numerous good RFAs needing to sign this summer and next summer), but Burns gives them a rental replacement for Heiskanen that doesn't have any commitment beyond this year. The Canes upgrade from Burns to Karlsson to make a monster Slavin-Karlsson top pair. The Penguins get some more futures.

Edit: reworked with taking Morrow out and replacing him with a 2025 3rd and Badinka
Burns would be an upgrade on Dumba (who isn't) by why are we giving up the best singular asset in this scenario and not dumbing Dumba to the Pens in the process?

I don't think you're dumping Dumba and getting Burns at only the cost of a 2026 2nd. I also don't think their 2nd is the best asset in the deal, Badinka is.

If I'm Carolina - I'd much much much rather have a pending UFA like Burns at $8MM per than Karlsson at $7MM per with 2.5 more years of term on that deal.

And this also requires Carolina to part with a recent high 2nd round pick + a 3rd round pick....

That deal sucks so bad Carolina.

Karlsson is a significant upgrade on Burns at this point.

I get that but I think history has shown that not many teams are willing to hand full-time duties over to rookie prospects. That said, I would imagine given Slavin's tremendous defensive abilities that pairing him with EK would make for a very well balanced and dangerous pairing.

Burns is a UFA in 3 months. Karlsson is a declining player you're stuck with thru June 2027.

Calling Karlsson "declining" is a dead giveaway you don't know what you're talking about. Did you just not watch the 4 Nations tournament where he was dominant?

He's the same defenseman he's been for years: an ultra talented OFD that can't play defense.

Karlsson is a 60 point player on a declining team. Nothing more has changed in his status, still a poor defensive D-man, but hardly declining.

Burns is not only UFA, but he is washed up at 40 years old.

Slavin is just about the perfect partner for Karlsson. Pens dont have that and his game has suffered.

I think that the Canes are the worst trading partner. They'll want him at a serious discount while trying to paying zilch in the process. Meaning no 1st, no top prospect... I don't want to hit that well again.

It has to be worth retaining on him. That's not the Canes.

Just walk away.

This is probably the best one sentence summary of why I think the Canes just aren't interested.

We need to stop saddling Slavin with these guys. The 4 Nations demonstrated what a force he can be when he doesn't have to babysit defensive liabilities.

The fact that Burns is a UFA and Karlsson is not is the reason why you'd rather have Burns.

You don't lock yourself to Karlsson for a few more years. I'd want that cap space ASAP. It's more valuable than either of these guys.

Karlsson would hold more value if he had just a year left or better or just a rental.

Retaining on 2 years of Karlsson is plenty valuable enough. Not a few, but 2.

Especially if it is 50%.

But... the Canes are just that kind of cheap not to want him at 5.0.

I don't think the Canes would pay the price needed to get EK at 50%.

At $5mil, EK becomes intriguing to A LOT of teams, especially with the cap going up.
