It seems weird that Detroit would trade Copp and additional futures for Rust. Copp is younger and has 1 less year on his deal. Whether you want to question the cap hit or signing, he at least can fit in anywhere for them. I don't see Rust getting as much powerplay time or as many minutes in general on Detroit right now.

Where are Penguin fans in the know at, in terms of how much they'd pay to move Graves out?

Fellow Canucks fans would lynch me for even suggesting it, but honestly...they need to fix this defence and Graves is a guy who has shown he can play legit, leveraged Top-4 minutes with the right partner. He'd legitimately be their third best defenceman probably.

Contract is obviously untenable, but i'm wondering if Pittsburgh would put assets on the table to make that deal move, that would grease the wheels for a three-way-ish trade somehow?

No idea what that would look like, and other Canucks fans will just yell at me about it. But i'm curious if there's a third team they could get involved that could make it work somehow?
Graves is more of a bad fit than a bad player imo

Not putting picks/prospects on the table to move him but would happily take back someone similar or a bad contract

Does Dubas have it in him to do the right thing if the situation calls for the trading away of pending UFAs?

And even if he wants to start the tear down will ownership let him?

He did with Guentzel. And I would guess a few are as good as gone this season as well. Pettersson and Eller for sure. Then depending on interest maybe someone else

Completely agree. The Penguins have enough cap flexibility that they could have extended Pettersson this summer if they were so inclined. It's pretty obvious they left him as a pending UFA so he could be traded if the season fell apart.

As others have said, blowing it up is moving Crosby and Malkin.

I have absolutely no idea what kind of trade value those two have considering their age.

There are a lot of teams that would be bidding to add Pettersson to their lineup.

I see DOC also being highly coveted at the deadline.

The Pens actually have some pieces to kickstart a rebuild, if FSG actually wanted to.

The issue is that neither of those guys would allow a trade.

In a perfect world, I think you sell off everyone not named Crosby and Malkin and let Crosby and Malkin mentor the next generation of players. I wouldn't hesitate in the slightest to move anyone else, including Letang and Karlsson. The issue is that these guys have such horrid deals that there is basically no way that they can be moved.

Karlsson has 3 years left at $10 million, so I could maybe see the Penguins being able to get value for him with retaining $4 million or so. But Letang is 37 already and his contract runs until he's 41, even with the reasonable AAV I think he's unmovable.

Guentzel was one trade so I didn't know if that was a one-of or a part of a bigger plan.

Been saying this for a few years to trade Crosby, Malkin, and Letang since Pens are shot. Rebuild will be done in 3 years. Let them chase some more cups. Bring them all back to retire at the end.

Malkin's likely retiring after next year and Letang's deal is downright immovable IMO.

Guentzel was one trade so I didn't know if that was a one-of or a part of a bigger plan.

I think Dubas' moves since has shown he clearly knows what this team is at this point. I don't think you're taking on Kevin Hayes for picks if you aren't rebuilding, or at least soft rebuilding.
