Confirmed with Link: Penguins and Mike Sullivan part ways

As a NYR fan, I do NOT want Sullivan to be their next head coach, but he likely will be. He's worse than Peter Laviolette in terms of not playing younger players and allowing them to develop properly.

From what I've head/read, Sullivan never adjusts how the team plays; maybe someone here can clarify/elaborate on this.

He's just riding Sidney Crosby's coattails since they win the Cup in 2017.

If Sully does end up with NYR, be ready for Othmann and Perrault to be stapled to the 3rd and 4th lines with 'defensive stalwarts' that will stunt their development (as if they had any with Laviolette) and then when they don't produce they will be in the press box watching.

I don't think he will do it, but if Dubas hires any of Quinn, Tortorella, Quennville, Laviolette, etc., then he should be tied to the Mario statute outside of PPG, covered in popcorn, and left to the fate of the pigeons and seagulls.
I don’t think any of those shitbirds are going to be hired. Well wait maybe the sexual assault hiding douche might be a legit risk. But the rest, no.

Jesus, people. Read the damn thread.

THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN. Other reporters refuted it and Dubas flat out shot it down.
Ah but it makes it more fun to discuss given how much of an ignorant pos Sullivan is.

Sullivan just got….

I highly doubt that Jeff Halpern will ever come here. Dude was the only opposition player I can ever remember that expressed a severe verbal displeasure for all things Penguins related. One might even call it a hatred. Yeah, I know it's a career move for him, but something tells me that it would be a big issue.
Exhibit A: Ron Hextall

Halpern can come in and sabotage the team just like that phillyfaced rat, did

The funniest shit is going to be other fans seeing how awful Sullivan is as a coach and that we were all not kidding about it.

Another guy I’d cancel out for lack of HC experience but Dubas might not is Tuomo Ruutu.

Frankly it’s hard to tell what his role even is with Florida though.

this PC is actually pissing me off, since it's clear Dubas hasn't been happy with the coaching for a while now. Who is getting off on the fans' unhappiness the last 12 months?!
I'm guessing FSG wasn't on board with cutting Sully loose until now. They loved him.

I'm pretty indifferent to this overall. The roster stinks and the pipeline isn't as good as people would like to think it is. I just don't think the coach moves the needle one way or another.
Listen, no one thinks the pipeline at this time is all that great. They just started that process of accruing good young talent in the last year. They're moving it along, but it's like only mile four of the marathon. As the carpenters use to say, ''We've only just begun''. We all understand that. But at least we have begun. Unlike under previous regimes

Jesus, Yohe. Do some homework. He includes Vellucci, MacDonald, and Tocchet as potential replacements.

Dubas flat-out said MacDonald won't be considered. Vellucci just got canned by Dubas. And Tocchet doesn't fit anything of what Dubas has talked about.

Did he give a reason behind that?

I don't think FSG had anything to do with it. Dubas said that he's always had a lot of respect for Sullivan and he continued to call him a great coach even today.

But he decided throughout the course of the season that the partnership just wasn't going to work anymore.

I would take a Tocchet

I usually don’t think players need to like their coach but I think it’s important for where this team is. Players love him.

Is Tocchet available? Or are you merely saying that you'd take someone like him? A Tocchet / Cullen bench might actually have something cooking. Though, that's ignoring this roster.

2018 was a really good team too. They took the Caps to the limit, again, and had it not been for some injuries I think they win that series. And that was the year the Caps won it all.

Likewise 2022, they had the Rangers number save for being on our 3rd string goalie. Still took it to game 7. And the Rags lost in the ECFs that year.

I know it seems sometimes like I blame everything that has gone wrong with this team on the coach. Fair enough. It gets old I get it.

And to be clear I just shrug about the Caps series... what can you do? They decided to just injure the Penguins instead of trying to beat them clean and the roster was worn out from playing a lot of hockey the prior two seasons. And I'll ALWAYS be thankful for Sullivan be the right guy at the right time especially in 2016 and just enough to see squeeze them through 2017 and win it all again. Brilliant stuff.

But I think he learned the wrong lessons, there. I think he looked too much at 2017 and not enough at 2016 when realistically 2016 looked like an actual plan while 2017 looked like a lotta luck while holding on for dear life and not at ALL repeatable. It seems like a trap a lot of coaches fall into... find a little success... learn the wrong lessons... build your rosters and gameplan from that point forward on shaky ground.

But yeah... there's appreciation there. Just like there was for Disco and hell even MT to a degree. But frankly if that NYR series is to be counted as a positive on Sullivan's resume then... well... I think it only reinforces my point because that series was pretty shameful even beyond the parts Sullivan and the team could not control.

This is still about 7 years too late. Basically wasted the remainder of Sid/Geno's best years with that useless twit behind the bench, and now that they're too old to be a legitimate contender, he finally leaves.

At least the rebuild won't bore the f*** out of me, even if Sullivan made the remainder of the Sid/Geno years an absolute chore.
No, he wasted Malkin is more like it. Sid he wanked off as much as he could and that was the biggest problem because he did it at the expense of Malkin playing well and the rest of the line up. I hope a new coach is smarter than what Sullivan kept doing to Geno.

I’d look at coaches like - Graham, Nelson, Carle (still someone I will keep cheerleading), etc.

I really hope Dubas doesn’t go for a retread like the geezers that keep playing musical chairs.

Ownership sided with Sully over JR. JR had his warts, but the last seven years would have been soo much better if he had won the power struggle.

He is out of contract come July 1. Nucks ate hoping to sign him long term.
I don't think Tocchet wants to return to the Pens either. Yeah JR is a shit show and so is Petey but the Pens are a tragic mess thanks to 8yrs of Sullivan forcing trades and destroying this team.

I found it f***ing hilarious Yohe was talking about an article and how it still pertains to Hextall. Imagine dumb f***s believing anything that fat f***ing loser thinks. That joke of a human being being butt hurt about Sully being fired has already made my year.
