Confirmed with Link: Penguins and Mike Sullivan part ways

I don’t buy that Sullivan went in with a bunch of demands but I do buy that his vision for this team’s future (try to compete right away) and Dubas’s vision for the team’s future (continue to rebuild with a long term outlook) were different and both decided it was best to move on.

About time. Should have happened after 2020.

That being said, thank you for the back-to-back Cups and, overall, a very successful tenure.

Now, we can modernize our approach, hopefully.

"Overall very successful tenure" might be a stretch.

If I'm doing my math right he what, missed the playoffs for three straight years and didn't get out of the first round of the playoffs for the three years before that.

Was he a good coach yes, was he here way too long, absolutely. This is a team that squandered a few years between the cups and when the bottom completely fell out by keeping a coach whose brand had gotten stale a long time ago.

Either hire a scrub like David Quinn for da tank or an up-and-comer like David Carle that can usher in the new age and develop alongside the team. Don't go for a middle of the road, quick fix attempt coach like Tocchet or Laviolette

In the end, the Penguins were more talented than they showed. They played like a poorly coached team. Even if they had not tuned out the head coach, their too often lackluster or disorganized play reflected poorly on the coach.
Wow, shocked there was actually fault found with Sullivan from anyone in the Pittsburgh media.

Always will respect him for the 2 cups, those were great times. But it's been a long road since. Always hoped something positive would work out after it seemed unlikely there was ever going to be a change but they'd always follow up a good stretch with poor play and sink the hopes yet again, season after season.

He's a good coach and will be somewhere next season. Will likely do well in a fresh room.

I guess FSG is okay with wiping their own ass of the money owed to Sully....

I thought that would have secured Sully's staying power.
Did he actually get fired or did they agree to mutual contract termination? Mutual means no more money.

I am really happy right now. I thought I would be shouting from the rooftops, dancing with the dog, shaking hands with complete strangers...but instead, I am experiencing a calm peace. This is nice. Having hatred lifted from you is so liberating.

I mean if the plan is to play a lot of youth next season then they are gonna have to try a LITTLE to not just get some complete muppet to coach this team.

I mean, FSG needs to be a little more cutthroat and creative but they’ve thrown a money on the Pens including dropping a bag for Dubas. Need to do more than just spend money as an ownership group but I don’t think the reason they kept him this long had anything to do with money.

I mean that’s the crux of it. They didn’t play with any structure or commitment to defense for some time now.

Nobody likes to hear this for some reason and obviously it's a bit reductive but Mike Sullivan has had a pretty shit career outside of two seasons.

It's just that... those two season were QUITE the doozy lol

This is why I think Sullivan will go to New York, they already have an established core that is over 30, and they aren't known for developing young forwards, so that's his dream team to coach.

Money was never the issue. Sully's owed, what, like $10M for the remaining two years of his deal? FSG's worth north of $13B last I checked. That's an infinitesimal amount of money to them.
