Penguins and Mike Sullivan agree to part ways

He has 2 more years on his contract,
so team hiring him has to pay the 5.5 million, or if the team hiring him wants to pay him 4 million, Pens pick up the rest, is how it usually works.
Okay, but I guess I don’t understand why that should be. Pens are, for all intents and purposes, breaking their contract with him. They’ll still pay him out, but they’re telling him they’ll pay him to not work for them.

You shouldn’t have to compensate a team that has chosen they don’t want a coach. You don’t deserve the benefit of the “you need to compensate us for your acquisition” idea within the CBA as it relates to this if you yourself are not willing to employ this person as your coach.

It actually sounds like it’s a mutual termination if the headlines are to be believed.

Sully would stay under certain conditions, the team wouldn’t meet those conditions, Sully knows there are other opportunities available and wants to pursue them.

The team could have said “you’re under contract, take your list of demands and shove it” and made him finish it out.

It sounds like he asked to be let out of the rest of his contract and they obliged. Which should mean no compensation needed from anyone.

That sounds more like it. He wouldn’t leave $11M on the table. Nobody would. So they terminated the contract?
He’s not leaving anything on the table, he’s going to get a raise from his new team.

It’s not like he’s unsure that he’ll have offers. He’ll get to pick from several offers.

He may already know where he’s going. This conversation likely took place the day after the Pens last game and the team probably gave him permission to start talking to other teams.

So he collects $5m from Pitt and the new team pays the difference?

No the Penguins would only be paying him if a team signs him for less than $5 million. So if he signed a $4.5 million a year deal, the Penguins would owe him $500k a year to get him up to that $5 million deal the Penguins signed him to.

If someone pays him more, they'll be off the hook entirely.

Kyle’s next head coach

Happy for Pens fans. From what I've read here over the last few years, I was worried any further employment might cause a full-scale mental health crisis in Allegheny county.
I live in Allegheny County. Between the pot-holes, Steelers quarterback drama, the Pirates being a dumpster, and the Penguins recent performance I think we're there already lol.
