I think you're probably the only one on the site that thinks that. It was impressive no doubt, but it was nowhere near as dominant as a number of seasons that came afterwards. The stats clearly tell the story.

A playoff berth and getting swept in the first round being that impressive says more about how sad the Rangers were.
Pretty sure that was the point.

Hell yeah, Jagr's season is more impressive than Malkin totalling 109 pts on a championship contending team featuring Crosby, Letang, etc. (regardless of injuries).

Crosby played 22 games that year. Letang played 51 games. The Pens were a .500 with both of them out of the lineup. They were a .476 team without Letang. They weren't even a playoff team with injuries that season. They were barely a playoff team the year before when Crosby was out.

Malkin's season is more impressive statistically than Jagr's considering he missed 7 games and still was ahead of the pack as much as Jagr was that year.

They (the Rangers) were picked to finished DEAD LAST in the league. And if Jagr hadn't injured his shoulder a few game before the season was done, who knows how it ends up.

They were 25th in 03/04. Finishing in the Top 10 two years later despite some media person picking them last is hardly anything to write about. Their biggest improvement was on the defensive side and the emergence of a certain Swedish goalie.

Jagr had an elite season; one made more impressive given being written off after his Washington years and his age. I am sure he was especially motivated that year. He took the expected jump downwards the folllowing years.

But none of this makes his season better than Malkin's clearly statistical superior season.
