Clarkson is worse. $5.25m to be a 4th liner. Mike Richards, Vinny Lecavalier, Dustin Brown and Dave Bolland are pretty bad as well.

Semin takes the cake though. 7 years at $7m per and he's not even playing on one of the worst teams in the league.

Clarkson is an average 4th liner with a 5.25 cap hit. I don't know how you could do worse than that.

Its a bad contract, but its not unbearable.

Doesn't come close to being as bad as Clarkson or Semin.

Lehtera has been a nice surprise and has chemistry with Tarasenko but he's been slowing down a bit.

The Blues will also have to watch for David Backes to maybe start declining within the next couple years, IMO.

I think Stastny's value will come in handy in the future for the Blues, and he'll be on the 1st or 2nd line. His numbers aren't bad, although I think he's capable of doing a little more and hitting 60+ points.

There are so many worse contracts out there. Think of how many players making $4-$5.5m who've just been terrible this season.

Backes will be an interesting one. Given his age and play style I think you'd be best not to re-sign him when his deal is up, and have Stastny take his place, but it's tough when someone's the captain and a big piece of the team's identity.

his usefulness will shine by the end of his contract while he plays with the young guys who will need a solid center to be with. jaskin/fabbri/rattie will start to shine with someone like stastny in between them.

Carolina is tied for third from the bottom...

Clarkson is being paid $5.4 million a year to be a fringe 4th line scrub... except our coach thinks he should be a second line player and get prime PP minutes (despite the fact that he has three power play points in two years).

He has five more years after this season, can't be sent to the minors because of his no move clause, has a limited no trade clause and his contract is structured in such a way that the Leafs would only save 8% of the value of the contract by buying him out.

So I'd respectfully disagree, Clarkson has the worst contract in the NHL AINEC. If you really think Stastny's contract is worse, Leafs will gladly do a one for one swap. :)

I don't think how he's used by a team should really play into how bad the contract is. He can be the guy they paid for, but he ended up the 3C because of the chemistry of the other lines and Lehtera exceeding expectations. In hindsight, I doubt they do the deal knowing what Lehtera can be and his chemistry with Tarasenko, but you never know with older players coming in from Europe if they're going to succeed or be another Jiri Dopita. For now he's a luxury on the third line no other team has, which is useful, but he creates problems down the line when others need new contracts. I don't think it's a bad contract, he's just on a team in the enviable position of having too much talent.

A luxury no other team has? What?
