Totally understand. But, they shouldn't be expecting players to tank. Cause, they are the ones who will be looking for a job in 2025 and what kind of film will they have put out. GMs and HCs are always looking for either high IQ players or high effort guys to fill out their rosters. Need to display that on film, especially when you are out of the PO. Shows that you don't need extra motivation to play the game and that your head is in the game regardless.
I agree entirely.

Admittedly, I haven't exactly followed the Patriots all that closely this season. But I'm not sure what people were expecting. That's a 4-13 roster. And they finished 4-13. Not grasping why he wasn't given a second season. Talent seems like the much larger problem right now.

Talent is definitely a larger problem, particularly on the o-line (easily the worst unit in the league) and at the offensive skill positions.

The defensive results doomed Mayo. They have some solid pieces on that side of the ball, and Mayo was hired as a defensive coach. Yet they were a bottom half unit by just about every measure.

Nah they spent like 4 or 5 seasons grooming Mayo to be the next guy. He wasn't just a stand-in/fall guy.

In doing so though, they forgot to check if he could actually coach. Given he pissed off the entire locker room like 4 weeks into his first season and it assumingly only got worse from there.

Brady was the offense, Belicheck was the defense.
The assistance coaches and coordinators? Did nothing but scratch their asses, make coffee, tell fart jokes, ride the wave of success the patriots had because of those two to cushy head coaching jobs.

When those guys got head coaching jobs, all they did was piss off people because they had enthusiasm of a chocolate covered onion. All they did was yell, scream and rubbing in the faces of front office and players that they were ZOMG PATRIOTS Super bowl success.

This will be the last and final Belicheck disciple to get a head coaching job. Mayo can be a coordinator somewhere else, although he might not be a good one either.

Yes, but they probably would have waited until tomorrow with the rest of the firings had they lost like they should have.

The timing here indicates that the Kraft family is extremely pissed, and in the end they only have themselves to blame.
Black Monday is normally the day, but in some ways, this is more respectful to Mayo.

I assume they made the decision earlier in the week or even before... So they have the paperwork and they have the man at the stadium. They can handle the termination without dragging him back to the office tomorrow.

As someone that has had to let people go in the business world and the sports world, the sooner the better and respecting the person is of utmost importance.

Agreed. It's the complete opposite at how the Bears handled Eberflus which was very unprofessional.

100% a talent issue. But, in addition to the defensive troubles outlined below, there was a lot of general issues, including at least 3 times this year he's said something at his post game press conference that he had to walk back on the following Monday. Add to that the team seemingly getting worse and worse and it was curtains.

Frankly Mayo was put into a bad spot way too early because of Kraft. He liked him personally so Mayo was given the kiss of death without the experience to handle the HC role, especially following Belichick with a roster bereft of talent. I feel bad for him but it was never going to get better here. He's got plenty of money and can do whatever he wants, hopefully he goes back into the media or just enjoys his fortune and family, seems like he has a good one.

Figure Mayo will take a year off. Enjoy the payout. Or volunteer or do a consultant job with either a college or something to keep him involved. Then in 2026 aim for at least a LB coach job. If he wasn't a DC before probably hard to land that next.

NE will have a decision to make at the draft. Best OL isn't considered as good as the one AZ landed from OSU 2 drafts ago. To help Maye, they could take the top rated WR. But, need to spend in Free agency and use their 2nd on the OL to help bolster that unit. Deep RB draft, so if they need help there too, can add one at the top of round 3. Pretty much an offensive draft for days 1-2.

The great thing about the Patriots right now is that they need talent at literally every position outside of QB so go BPA at each spot and use free agency to supplement.

Priority is Oline. I think FA is the way to fill out the WR room, but only because I think Tee Higgins is the big move there and we haven't drafted a decent WR in like 20 years. But they could go in 15 different directions and still get better since there are like 5 or 6 guys that should really be starters on this team next year and everything else needs upgrades.

Biggest gripe with Tee Higgins is his availability, guy shows up 9-10 games a year but he’s looking for the bag. Bengals about to pay Chase a boatload of money.

The strategy should be BPA at every pick.

Need to fill holes at literally every position except QB (and punter, I guess).
