Laine needs to accept a major haircut contract wise so a team can afford a powerplay specialist with massive defensive liabilities

I'm sure that with 50% retained some teams who miss out on the big UFAs this summer and are desperate for goal scoring ability will take him and even pay some assets (picks) for him. It's only 1 year, and the cap is going up a lot.

Would have to pay to move him, he’s terrible

This, Laine has proven to be a PP threat at some point. Im sure that at 50% retained, Carolina, LA and Dallas would like that try.

...next deadline is when he is moved...if he can be moved...
I don’t disagree with your point.

My only question is can Montreal afford to keep him another entire year?

They are year 4 in the rebuild, look on the precipice of being a wildcard team, which is good progress. But this guy is bringing them backwards.

I can’t imagine he’d be good for the development of the team. Vets are supposed to set the tone.

This is why Waddell was more than happy to grant Laine his wish

Guy hasn’t played last year. Got a major knee injury in training and people wonder why he’s a step behind almost 3/4 into the season.

No one is trading for him. He needs time to get back in game shape form and find his rhythm. Hopefully he does that sooner than later and is 100% ready next year
This was the best post so far in this thread.

Habs gave Lanie the perfect chance to rehab his reputation and get back to playing top level hockey. He had a good start but NOW it's clear he will never be the Lanie from the past. With this his last chance to rehab his game it's over for Lanie. Habs will buy him out next year and If Lanie plays again it will be in Finland and even that is a big maybe. Nobody in the NHL will touch him now. I don't blame the Habs for trying it might have paid off.
There's no way the Canadiens will buy out Laine with one year left on his contract. They will hope Laine is healthy for next season and has the motivation to play his best so he can get a new NHL contract.

Laine experiment in Montreal seems to be falling apart.

With them regressing - probably makes sense to dump him at the deadline, question is - is he worth anything to a contender, if so what is his value?”
I love how Montreal fans we praising this guy like a god. Now look.
As I mentioend, this guy is a HUGE Cancer....Stay away.

It’s not an excuse but reality. If he doesn’t perform next year you just let him go. There’s literally no reason to take a decision now. He’s barely played 27 games
I don't think there is a decision to be made yet anyway. This is just the Laine experience, once he starts going down he really hits him hard. Is he shooting less lately? That becomes a pretty common thing in a game when he stops trusting his shot/offense. He goes on absolute heaters, even more wild than what he started his Montreal tenure with but it's unfortunately followed by what you see now without fail. Maybe moving forward he finds a way to not let the lows be so low but this isn't out of the norm for him at all. Wonder who he will blame in the future.

Last people who should be chirping about Laine are BJ fans. The amount of denial from BJ fans on this board while he wore their jersey was comical.
We never said he was gonna be a 40-50 goal scorer again like MANY Habs fans. While the CBJ and Winnipeg fans are just shaking their heads.

Dudes a cancer. Every team he's been on finds it out eventually. Habs have a good young team, you don't want a guy like him around screwing the vibes.

How about the part where he shit talks the team in the media after his departure?
It's never Laine's fault. He cried when he was on the second line in Winnipeg because he thought he was better. He cried on the 1st line in Columbus because the rest of the team wasn't better. He cries when coaches tell him he's not doing what is expected. He cries when team mates tell him he doesn't do what is expected. He cries, and cries and cries. But somehow the entire world is wrong and he is right.

I’d be very curious to see how he does next season in a contract year
I think it will be interesting. I can see him looking good. But for the Habs to get value for him at the next TDL they need all hands on deck, pay off any reporter they can find to write good things about him (LeBrun is always for sale) and duct tape Laine's mouth shut.

That boy is an idiot. He needs that Phil Kessel landing spot. Strong leadership to keep him out of the media and a strong understanding that he Isn't the man on the team so FIFO (Fit In or F Off). Unfortunately he has cosen to F Off more than Fit In to date.
