See? A reasonable offer would be no problem.
His salary was around 10% of the cap with lower taxes.
You think 6 years instead 8 years possible (the big advantage) AND a pay cut while the cap is rising sound reasonable?
Sorry, that‘s 1.5 out of 2 middle fingers. He will be 28, not 34 like Stamkos.
I‘m not talking about maximizing his contract, but at least show some respect.
I know, fans always try to find the sweetheart deal as GM of their team, but if he stays healthy, Laine will make closer to 10m for the longest possible term.
What is and isn't reasonable is in the eye of the beholder and we have no way of knowing one way or the other what Laine considers reasonable.

But as hypothetical counters to your points,
He failed to live up to his current 8.7m deal so it shouldn't be used as the base
Molson has shown he's willing to front load deals and use signing bonuses that helps reduce the cap hit while the player still gets paid
He will likely want to go from his current M-NTC to a full NTC/NMC, that will come at a cost to the dollar amount
And then there's all the personal reasons that might be willing to give up money for security, family, friend, roster building reasons.

For example, suppose the rumours of Ehlers really wanting to play with Laine are true and reciprocated by Laine. Given that we could be negotiating with both players at the same time if they do really value playing together on the Habs then they will have to take fairly deep discounts to do so. So it becomes a question of how much money are they willing to leave on the table to make that happen, because it's safe to say if Laine is at 9m or higher then it's not just going to happen, but at 7m each it suddenly is something that's workable, are both guys willing to give up 2m a year to make their dream a reality? Who knows but it's a possibility.

Anyways it's not like I feel like we need a discount or we shouldn't sign Laine, and Laine is still very clearly still shaking off the rust from his long absence so until we see him back to form it's kind of pointless to discuss.

I was just watching the shift by shift and noticed that his first shot attempt on the first PP hit the opponents stick and broke it in half. It's something that happens a lot with him and then the opponent has to play without a stick. I've seen it happen many times over his career.

Now this "broken stick goal against Detroit was the first one where it deflected in from breaking the stick.

I've seen him scoring many times after first destroying defenseman stick. He just did it to new habs D Carrier when they played less than 2 weeks ago. Broke carriers stick on first shot and scored on 2nd shot.

Now he's just shooting through the sticks.

So the next step is going to be shooting through the bodies? This is a worrying pattern, someone could get hurt.

Man…Hugo are a better GM then I could ever be. I would have easily given a 2nd round draft pick for Laine.

If only I could be a fly in the wall, I would be really interested to see how Hugo convinced Columbus to pay them a 2nd round draft pick for Laine.

Sam Pollock level trade. Generation trade. I would have easily folded and given Columbus whatever they wanted.

The important thing is you saw Laine’s upside, which is more than enough. Knowing the specific price to pay to get him is beyond you and I’s grasp because we’re not privy to the conversations between GMs.

There are a lot of commentators who were dead set against acquiring Laine because they didn’t see the upside. Giving or losing a second round pick in this transaction is a marginal difference.

Dude’s a heck of a talent and he’s far from finished. Hopefully by the end of this season we can gameplan with him long term.

I don't notice him much outside the PP. But he's absurdly good from that spot. It's like having a cheat code. Even if that's ALL he does for us it's a huge win.
He had few good plays. He set up Newhook twice, with no result and hit pass to Evans in neutral zone, which led to Evans empty net chance.

Honestly I loved the sequence when he was hooking his man around the entire zone but didn’t draw the penalty until the last egregious hook/hold. He didn’t give up. It was beautiful.

This is Laine playing 13 minutes a game with mostly Dach and Newhook. Constantly setting Newhook up for prime chances.

Imagine if it was 19 minutes with 13 and 14?

That would make sense but we need to prop up our 1st overall pick up with 13 and 14 otherwise he looks pretty mid-tier.
