I don't think anyone is rushing to do anything on the contract front. Laine or the front office.

In summer I bet ....KH won't wait till he is a UFA

I would say scoring goals and stopping pucks are dimensions we’ve been starving for recently.

Laine is very hot and cold. He's hot right now. Be prepared for when he's not.

Also, the tank isn't being ruined. They'll still finish in the bottom five. There's no way Nashville, Detroit, and Buffalo stay down here with us.

Being hot and cold is to be expected with pure snipers. He's not like a Toffoli or a Pacioretty who can still contribute in other ways. Shooting the puck isn't an exact science. And there's always some luck into it. I understand the playstyle. Trying to cheat, floating around, being selfish, being pissed when you miss your shot. Coaches hating you but still giving you top offensive time. Some people just don't see it though.

Being hot and cold is to be expected with pure snipers. He's not like a Toffoli or a Pacioretty who can still contribute in other ways. Shooting the puck isn't an exact science. And you think there is no team willing to offer him 7 years, less taxes and maybe even palm trees? And his agent doesn‘t know the cap is rising significantly? Good luck with that.
I think you have to offer him 8 years and at least the same number before taxes other teams south the border will offer him.

I know. I would not care for warm weather either…but sometimes you take the bad with the good.
If they threaten you with term, money, lower taxes, a competing team and maybe a good buddy of yours, you might forgive them the warm weather.

Look there's no guarantee that Laine won't want to maximize his contract, in which case it probably does mean hitting FA and going somewhere with all those things. But there's plenty of reasons why he might not have money as the #1 priority.

And keep in mind offers aren't on the table at the same time. He has to turn down what will likely be a very reasonable deal from MTL without knowing which teams are actually going to be offering all the things he wants.

His salary was around 10% of the cap with lower taxes.
You think 6 years instead 8 years possible (the big advantage) AND a pay cut while the cap is rising sound reasonable?

I‘m not talking about maximizing his contract, but at least show some respect.
I know, fans always try to find the sweetheart deal as GM of their team, but if he stays healthy, Laine will make closer to 10m for the longest possible term.

We're a long ways from Laine & the Habs deciding on their future together...

but If he continues to fit in and succeed the way he has, I'll be shocked if we don't see a very "team friendly" extension.

At 28, I could see a 4 year/9-10M per extension, which, for a ppg/40+goal player that age would/will be a huge ufa discount.

Laine has already banked ~70M$. He doesnt strike the profile of an athlete that needs the status of being paid more than similar peers or "set the bar" for them. with his struggles with both internal and tesm dynamics, feeling good where he is is likely to be a huge priority... Crossing that 100M$ mark by 32 years old may well be enough financial comfort and validation to let the "fit" & "be part of something great" priorities weigh more than the "get paid" ones.

We'll see... but if I'm betting today, I'd bet on him being here at less (& potentially far less) than the Ufa market would give him

Just a little comment on the palm trees: him being from Finland it might be different. He might prefer the more varied and not so hot climate of Canada over the stifling heat of say Florida.

And for Laine, I think being happy is key. If he is happy here, he will sign even if it meanl leaving some cash on the table that he would have gotten in the US.
