He used to be really good until December 2018 when Paul Maurice and Winnipeg management sandbagged him by trying to turn him into a 2way player. Before that Laine had 101 goals in 179 games. After that he had 103 goals in 301 games before debuting with the Canadiens. So he dropped from 0.56 goals/game to 0.34 goals/game in a timeperiod when every other young player usually turns into much better goal scorers. You can clearly talk about redemtion when it comes to Laine!

Yeah no. Laine had a lot of cheat in his game. You can't play in this league unless you run the defensive routes you are supposed to. I hope Laine scores 50 goals per year for the next 10 years but let's be real he had issues and injuries.

I think he is the player he has always been. Elite scorer, good to great offensive player with limited overall game. In right situation he can be your teams best scorer and top-2 offensive player.

Elite complementary piece for any team but nor a core piece to builld around to.

Acquiring Laine was a great move by Hughes, but the moment I saw the thread title I knew who the OP was.

There was no redemption necessary. Laine was very good when healthy during his time on terrible Columbus teams. He's been great for a while.

"Great" lol

Not by the end of it. He was getting caved in on a playoff team because he was that atrocious defensively.
Nope. He was a constant threat on the PP, even started his last season with a three point game.

Jeff Skinner is on his 15th season in the NHL and he's never played any defense. Laine is a bigger and more talent version of Skinner and Skinner has done good so far offensively with 362 career goals. Laine would've been fine as just a "Jeff Skinner on steroids!" But no you guys had to mess him up with your 2 way talk...

No, you don't understand. Even the most offensively gifted players have to have basic defensive responsibility to play in the NHL. Look what happened to nail yakupov. He scores hundreds of points in the OHL and scores decently in his rookie season in the NHL, and then proceeds to fall off a cliff. What happened? Over time the holes in his game became apparent and he was forced to adapt to the speed and professionalism of the NHL. Nail didn't have the IQ to play in the big league and so now he's gone, even with that box of offensive tools. The good thing about Laine is he is about 10x smarter than nail, so he can adapt and stick in the league. Laine is a killer and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him reach his potential later in his career. He had to basically relearn the game and had bad luck with injuries. The habs were very smart to aquire Laine.

Laine always been a star player, just a bit pricey considering the baggage and injuries.

OP, you're not watching/following other teams in the NHL?

He reminds me of kovalev where he plays better with an active crowd.

Probably hits 70 goals next year. 60 at home, 10 on the road.
Can’t we just be allowed to enjoy a player without them being overhyped? This is exactly why so many non Habs fans root against Habs players. I was hoping Laine would do well and now I’m actually questioning if I’d rather him fail just so you can see how ridiculous this is.

Yep. Dude has only ever scored 40 goals once in a season ages ago and now someone expects 70 out of him.

He'll be lucky enough to stay healthy and see 30 goals a season going forward.

The Jets have amassed quite the collection of players that don't really bother with that in recent years though, and are doing very well with Connor & Scheifele still there.
