Player Discussion Patrik Laine: Part 2 - Healthy Living Edition

He has a super long stick, which gives him the crazy shooting power. Its just a drawback of who he is and what hes asked to do right now.
Yeah his long stick hurts him in tight, makes him look awkward and soft in certain battles. Gotta live with that and have some good will.

Felt like he was starting to make it work before the injury/mental health setbacks.

It'd be a shame if he can't get back to that level of confidence with the puck.

I'm looking forward to what a full healthy off-season and a full training camp can do for Laine. He's been looking better and better as the season progresses, even if his insane PP shooting percentage has dropped.

Having both a healthy Laine and Demidov on our 2nd line next season will give us a look we haven't had in decades, two very legit scoring lines that can go up against any team's.

Not putting Demidov with Laine is a bit disappointing not gonna lie.

I see where Marty is coming from though. He thinks Laine can't handle more minutes at this stage. Putting Laine and Kapanen on the fourth line means he can cut their minutes when things get tough and he can put Evans pretty much anywhere else at the late stages of the game.

Hopefully we'll see Laine and Demidov together at some point!

This team finally had a chance to hook up Laine with a decent player but they decide to screw him. If they were so worried about the defensive aspect why didn't they just put Evans as the center?

Watching him play this weekend, he is lucky to even be in the lineup... The guy has no heart, all the skills and talent in the world, just care a little Patrick!! That's on him

Laine screws himself by doing nothing on 5 on 5 but turning the puck over.
I thought he played decent the past few games. He could do more but It would also help if he had someone that could finish his plays.

Laine's play is annoying me. But I still have to see him with skilled players.

The hope now is that he can produce and learn not to hurt the team the rest of the game. Part of his game is trying high skill plays, and those won't always succeed. So the hope is he'll know when not to try them. But I was hoping Matheson would learn that, and he hasn't at all...

He plays PP with the most skilled players we have.. it doesn't stop him from making terrible plays with the puck on the PP either. He's just a stationary cannon at this point this year. I have 0 issues with Demidov being sheltered from playing with him 5 on 5 tonight.

The point of playing him with skilled players isn't to stop him from turning the puck over. That will still happen. It's so he gets set up more for more good scoring opportunities and so other players will finish the good plays he makes to create scoring opportunities for others. And the hope is the positives from the increased production will outweigh the negatives of the turnovers.

If Demidov doesn't play with Laine, I'd like to see him with Kapanen.

He doesn't make good plays for his linemates.. that's why on the PP he isn't really creating anything for anyone else. He's just a one timer.. that's all his game is right now.

If he can't create outside of his shot on the PP with the best players on the team, expecting him to do it outside of that setting isn't realistic.

This is the edition of Laine we have for this year.. and that edition isn't going to be trusted with a rookie who will have defensive warts.

He can create for his linemates. Did you see the pass to get Newhook in all alone? This is what he can do. Many times he'll make a nice zone entry and find a teammate only to have the defense re-set because it was an offensively less-gifted linemate he passed it to.

On the pp, his role is to be the trigger man.

Had a feeling St Louis was going to pull something like this. Feels like he's got something against tall handsome blonde guys. Probably stems from his days playing with Lecavalier and Stamkos and now he's taking it out on Laine...

I've seen him create chances for Newhook, even though their ice time has been low.

You just ignore those?

And he moves on the PP, sometimes goes to bumper and sometimes to RD spot, when teams cover him hard on the left. Him just being there forces the opponent to cheat against him and that opens up room for the others in the PP unit to get chances closer to the net.

He has produced on the PP, he's the most efficient PP player in the league. Why anyone would remove the shot from the equation is beyond me.

I just saw MSL's press conference.

It sounds like it will be:

Armia - Newhook - Demidov. (this I heard MSL say)
Laine - Evans - Kapanen or Heineman (this I'm conjecturing based on the other lines)

Now this:

He can create for his linemates. Did you see the pass to get Newhook in all alone? This is what he can do. Many times he'll make a nice zone entry and find a teammate only to have the defense re-set because it was an offensively less-gifted linemate he passed it to.

Oliver Kapanen can create for his linemates too. The one pass to Newhook doesn't negate the 15 other passes he tried to make, that were terrible decisions, and resulted in the play going the other way.

I know what his role is on the PP but you can't just blast away every time, he plays 5 on 4 with the best players on the team and when his shot isn't working, he isn't creating anything else.

The idea of Laine is a different thing than the actual version of Laine we have.

I never said to take him off the Powerplay, I said that he plays 5 on 4 with the best players on the team and despite that, he isn't creating offense for the rest of the players on the ice when he's there. There's no evidence to support that Laine should play with Demidov when you put the defensive impact into the equation.

Laine is limited. But the hands are there, and for more than just shooting. I've been seeing him make a lot of plays like the one to Newhook...

But if the pluses don't outweight the minuses, it's a no-go going forward...

I'm looking forward to seeing Kapenen gain MSL's trust...

Who's the tall handsome blonde guy? 🤮🤢
