Player Discussion Patrik Laine: Part 2 - Healthy Living Edition

Laine and his girlfriend run a foundation and the money Laine makes goes to that foundation as well as their day-to-day living.

I don't think he would sign an extension for 4M a year, even if it was maximum term, but he might go from 8.7M to 7M.

Is that enough for a PP specialist at this point, or will his impact increase with Demidov at his side for even strength play?

Problem is whether we wait until the end of next year to sign an extension with laine or whether we do so in this offseason?

The difference might be a Million or so AAV, in the end, but, at least, we'd be more certain of what the fur holds for Laine in terms of overall production...
Well, he has been in league quite long and even his last contract was $34.80M according to puckpedia and for career after that :
"Est Career Earnings$49,475,000"

So even with taxes if he has gotten like half it is like 25 millions. I call that financially stable, can't believe that everything is gone :D

his foundation is most definitely not sustained by his salary

"To sustain our mission, we raise funds through donations, merchandise sales, events, and grants."

That will be my nickname for Demidov from now on. Russian gas!
Well that requires a picture, here he is, Russian Gas:

For those too old or too young to know, that is the body of a Finnish drummer called Gas Lipstick, I just put Demidov's face in it.

What a snipe last night in the top corner boys!!
YUP!! Normal Laine is coming back step by step.

And all you Laine-haters: We dont mind if you change your opinion about Laine. We wont hold it against you or think less of you. Its actually quite likely that we already think pretty little of you, if you have been consistently so negative, blind and wrong about what Laine's normal level is and will be when he is healthy.

Just keep him ffs.

We can afford him. He’s producing. He’ll only get better. It’s 99.9% his knee.

If the knee NEEDS surgery then he should get it. It would suck if he loses time to train but it seems like if you let this linger things could get worse. But I’m no doctor. I just hope it heals because a 100% Laine with Demidov on a SECOND LINE equals good night league.

I think his stamina is weak due to poor training over the past few years and his balance is off due to the knee injury. I really hope he doesn’t have off-season surgery and lose another opportunity to get in shape. It’s painful watching such a skilled player be so… off on the ice.
What he should do, and what every player should do, is get the surgery but take the additional time off to train. You can’t play in this league if you haven’t trained. Take an additional couple months off. It’ll do wonders.

Personally I'm too lazy too hold on to grudges on here.

I personally have no idea what Laine will cost to be renewed. There are few comparables and so I see a very broad range of where it could land.

5 years, 33 million?

He can’t turn to one side. If he has to change direction on his bad knee it’s like watching a semi-truck try to take a hair pin turn
I was gonna comment on this but forgot. This is exactly my experience on similar sounding knee injuries. You cant change direction on the bad knee. In addition, you cant "circle" (sirklata) to the direction of your bad knee. You can circle to the other direction just fine but not to the direction/side of your bad knee. Not effectively in any case.

When I used to play hockey with a similar injury (in terms of how it affected my mobility on ice) I couldnt even quickly brake while turning right (right knee was broken), as the coordination of the right leg was so off due to the knee. Felt so injury prone every time I would have my right leg as the main point of contact to the ice.

That sounds fair. Id be happy with that. 5x35 is probably the limit I would do.
Im pretty sure Laine would take it if offered this off-season. This as there is some risk taking (and risk aversion) from both parties at that point. At next TDL or similar its gonna be a much steeper price, or basically a trade as Habs cant really pay that much. If Laine has another injury-riddled season then the price will be lower but Laine wont sign a long deal in such a scenario. Might be what Habs prefer as well.

If Habs sign Laine 5 years at 35 million (7 millions per year), that would be a very very good deal for both sides.

The top 6 will be fun to watch for many years to come with Suzuki, Slaf, Caufield, Demidov, Laine and a top 6 C (maybe Hage, maybe another guy).

We build something truly special and Laine should be part of it, 100%. Having a 35-50 goal scorer it's a huge piece. He can pass the puck aswell with great hands. Since 4 nations, he play with more effort.

Honestly his down games are so bad that I am not sure he's even worth that, but to be honest his once or twice a year 10 game streaks are enough to push a team into the playoffs. Doesn't make sense not to keep such a guy if you can surround him at ES with guys who can cover his defensive weaknesses (aka not Newhook and Dach).

It's going to be really interesting to see what Laine will do with a good 2c and Demidov on his other wing.

He's already been on pace for about 35, 36 goals this season. It's not a stretch to see him getting 40+ with a good 2c and Demidov...

Yeah, I think he deserves a chance with a decent 2C and a full summer being healthy. He's starting to skate much better lately, so chances are he should be in good enough shape next year. I think we should also temper expectation regarding his 5 on 5 play. He's become a bit like (0old) Ovechkin, meaning he's not an F1 anymore, he's mostly an F3 or F2 who waits and pounces on chances. This is where I think there might be a clash or issues with MSL, as MSL plays a sort of layered offensive system that's very demanding on all three forwards. You can't really fall back and always be an F2 or F3. Its especially demanding on centers which is why Dach being broken hurt the team so much this year, but the wingers have to constantly be aware without the puck. He doesn't really make exceptions for individual players, more so he wants them to bring their own style, but within his philosophy.
